The five best series to watch on Netflix this weekend

Every weekend calls for a special watchlist, but this time around, there’s absolutely nothing holding Netflix back.

A lot of the credit goes to the Duffer Brothers for reopening the Upside Down saga viewers had been waiting for over three years. While most fans are expected to jump right in on the premiere date itself, for those running out of excuses to go on washroom breaks and catch up with Stranger Things, the weekend is the only saviour.

But if you think that’s all to grab your eyes this weekend, you’re in for a surprise with what Best of Netflix has in store.

Say bye to every plan that has no room for a watch party because the five best series to watch on Netflix this weekend are worth the social shutdown.

The five best series to binge on Netflix this weekend

Maledictions (Daniel Burman, 2025)

The further you stroll around on Netflix, the more likely you are to be surprised. So, if you’re seeking some surprise this weekend, tune into this Argentine limited series, Maledictions, AKA Las maldiciones, based on Claudia Piñeiro’s novel of the same name. A political thriller that hinges on the thin line between personal and professional duty can never go wrong. And neither does Maledictions.

The enticing plot is an intense page-turner and revolves around a dedicated governor, Fernando Rovira, in Northern Argentina. While preventing the enactment of a law that goes against his interests, his plans face an unforeseen roadblock. It turns out his private secretary is responsible for the abduction of his young daughter, and now, he must choose between his political ambitions and his family.

Absentia (Gaia Violo and Matt Cirulnick, 2017-2020)

Originally an Amazon Prime Video series, Absentia, landed on Netflix pretty recently, and was quick to leave viewers in jaw-drops. The gripping thriller series stars Stana Katic and Patric Heusinger as Special Agents Emily Byrne and Nick Durand, respectively. The show, currently streaming on Netflix, kicks off with the disappearance of Emily during a cat-and-mouse chase with a serial killer, infamous and feared among the masses for his signature move: ripping off the eyelids of his victims.

Nick continues the search for two years before having her declared dead in absentia. However, the entire ordeal leaves him and his son struggling to move on. Cut to four years later, the Durands finally feel life falling back into place, courtesy of Alicia, Nick’s second wife. But when a body washes up on the shore, with its eyelids cut off, the question arises: was Conrad Harlow, who went to prison for Emily’s murder, wrongfully convicted? Or, is he playing with his puppets from there itself?

The Irregulars (Tom Bidwell, 2021)

Loosely adapted from the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Irregulars is a British crime drama on Netflix that will perfectly fit into your mood board this weekend. The mystery adventure series is set in Victorian London, but primarily revolves around a cluster of troubled teenagers recruited by Dr John Watson to solve otherworldly crimes, involving supernatural elements.

The title is derived from the name of the group, comprising Beatrice, Jessie, Billy, and Spike. Although they’re originally called on to investigate the mysterious abduction of many newborns, what they don’t know is that this is far from an ordinary case they’re poking around with.

The 7 Lives of Lea (Charlotte Sanson, 2022)

It won’t be a complete surprise if the first volume of Stranger Things season five leaves you craving for more supernatural drama than is there in the list. So, when that urge kicks in, play The 7 Lives of Lea on Netflix. The Netflix thriller opens in June 2021, when the protagonist of the series, Lea, discovers a horrific finding during an outdoor party: skeletal remains.

When she reawakens the next day, 30 years in the past, Lea finds herself inhabiting the body of a man called Ismael. Although she returns to herself during her next awakening, she soon realises that the body belonged to Ismael himself. And the supernatural occurrences aren’t going to stop anytime soon, since they come with a purpose.

Stranger Things (The Duffer Brothers, 2016-2025)

It’s almost impossible to shield oneself from the barrage of spoilers coming your way. However, if you do survive the days and make it through for the love of Hawkins, save all the room for the first volume of Stranger Things season five. The story picks up in the fall of 1987, when Hawkins is still recovering from the loss and trauma following Vecna’s devastating trail.

With Max comatose, Hawkins under military quarantine, Vecna disappeared, and the intense hunt for Eleven ongoing, the stakes have gone through the roof. But considering these kids always find a way, so must you, for a spoiler-free touchdown to the weekend.
