The 2024 SAG Awards will be streamed live on Netflix for the first time

On Wednesday, the nominations for the 30th edition of the Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced. For the first time ever, it will be streamed live on Netflix.

The ceremony will be hosted by Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, which takes place on February 24th. It comes after a significant year of tension between the Hollywood studios and actors who are represented by the SAG-AFTRA union, a combination of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes that commenced in July and May, respectively last year, threw many of the Hollywood studios’ plans and scheduling into disarray. A protracted dispute over pay was behind their decision to walk out. Therefore, the 2024 SAG Awards has increased significance.

Barbie, Oppenheimer and American Fiction lead the movie nominations this year, while HBO’s Succession is at the front of the TV series. Other prominent feature films to feature are The Colour Purple and Killers of the Flower Moon, which are both in the running for ‘Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture.’

Notably, fans will be able to see a parallel between the films and TV series celebrated at the SAG Awards as those at the recent Golden Globes, bar The Colour Purple, which was not included in the Globes’ major movie categories, surprising many, and leading them to go as far as to describe the situation as a snub. On the other hand, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things took home several honours at the Globes, but only has two nominations from SAG.

Historically, the SAG Awards have been regarded as the best clue to how the Academy Awards nominations will pan out. They will be revealed next weekend.
