The most popular movies chart on Netflix US looks wild this week, with one of the most unexpected entries sitting on the throne. But if you’ve already checked out the global trends, you know well where we’re getting at.

During the week of August 24th to August 30th, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look didn’t just grab the international top spot on the most popular movies chart with 31.1million views. It left its mark in 58 countries, including Brazil, the Bahamas, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, and, most importantly, the United States.

While that puts the global and regional charts on par to an extent, the similarities between the two just don’t end there. Like the international trends, the second spot in the US belongs to James Ashcroft’s serial-killer mystery The Whisper Man, based on Alex North’s bestselling 2019 novel, which is also ranked second on the most popular international movies chart this week with 23.2million views.

Next in line is the Mexican Netflix Original movie Facing El Chapo, which chronicles the intense manhunt and subsequent recapture of notorious drug lord Joaquín“El Chapo” Guzmán, based on an intriguing true story. Meanwhile, succeeding it on this week’s most popular movies chart in the US is the Danish psychological thriller The Secret Woman, about an amnesia-stricken woman who embarks on an unlikely mission to find the truth about her forgotten identity.

Rounding out this week’s top five most popular movies on Netflix US is one of the latest standalone films from the critically acclaimed sports documentary series, Untold, titled The Testimony of Vince Young.

Following right next on the most popular movies chart Stateside is the fan-favourite animated comedy flick The Angry Birds Movie 2, inspired by the game of the same name. Moving on, ranked seventh on the US chart this week is the Sunny Sandler dramedy Don’t Say Good Luck that viewers simply cannot seem to get enough of.

Up next on the most popular movies chart in the US, the gripping 2026 Lifetime thriller, To Catch a Cheater, can be seen reigning for a second consecutive week, followed by Louis Leterrier’s The Last House, holding on to its chart momentum for four weeks straight.

As for the final entry? Netflix has Tim Story’s hilarious Kevin Hart comedy 72 HOURS ranked ninth. And with that, we officially come to a close for the week.
