The most popular movies on Netflix are always in flux, which is also why cinematic trends come and go almost every other week.

But despite losing the crown in its debut week, the gritty mystery adaptation, based on Alex North’s bestselling novel, has officially taken the top spot on the most popular movies chart during the week of August 31st to September 6th.

With 33.4million views, The Whisper Man, starring Adam Scott, Robert De Niro, and Michelle Monaghan, has become the number one movie in 68 countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, the Bahamas, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Ecuador, among others.

While fans surely expected no less from the star-studded serial-killer thriller, Brian Knappenberger’s Turning Point: Generation 9/11 ranks second on the most popular movies chart this week with 5.2million views, arriving 25 years after the tragic 9/11 attacks in 2001.

Up next, the most popular movies chart has an action-packed blast from the past: The Hard Corps, directed by Sheldon Lettich, which is the fourth collaboration between him and Belgian martial artist and prolific actor Jean-Claude Van Damme. While that alone has grabbed 5million views this week, the 2006 action movie is also one of the top 10 trending titles in 55 countries.

Ranked fourth is last week’s most popular movies chart topper, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, with 4.4million views. Meanwhile, the fan-favourite adventure-fantasy animated comedy Shrek follows closely in fifth with 4.3million views, rounding out the top five candidates on this week’s trending movies chart.

Next in line is Lindsay Gossling’s American-Canadian disaster drama, 13 Minutes, with 4.2million views, which, although it doesn’t enjoy great ratings on review aggregator sites like Rotten Tomatoes, has been surprisingly making waves on the most popular movies chart for two weeks straight.

The title right below on this week’s most popular movies chart is the 2009 horror thriller Anaconda: Trail of Blood with 3.6million views, ranked seventh. Succeeding the old Hollywood movie in the international rankings is yet another beloved animated title, The Angry Birds Movie 2, based on a very popular video game of the same name.

But if you think Shrek is the only entry from the franchise, you’ll be surprised to find its sequel, Shrek 2, sitting quite cosy on this week’s most popular movies chart at ninth. As for the final entry, it is Louis Leterrier’s gritty sci-fi mystery thriller The Last House with 3.3million views. And with that, it’s officially a wrap for the week ending September 6th.
