The 10 most popular movies on Netflix this week: August 2026

The most popular movies chart on Netflix just underwent its biggest August reshuffle yet, with every cinema bowing down to the next evolution of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto series.

During the week of August 24th to August 30th, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look debuted at the top of Netflix’s most popular movies chart with 31.1million views. As one of the most highly anticipated rollouts from last week, it is currently the number-one in 58 countries, including Brazil, the Bahamas, Chile, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic, among others.

Ranked second on the most popular movies chart this week is James Ashcroft’s The Whisper Man with 23.2million views. Although the Robert De Niro starrer minted quite the views considering its August 28th release and cracked into the weekly charts, the serial-killer mystery couldn’t topple the GTA VI extended look. However, the crime thriller remains the number one movie in seven countries this week, such as Argentina, Greece, Hungary, and Uruguay.

Up next on this week’s most popular movies chart is Louis Leterrier’s star-studded The Last House with 5.8million views. This marks the fourth consecutive week the sci-fi mystery thriller has maintained its momentum on the weekly Netflix chart. Meanwhile, going just as strong for a third straight week is the bittersweet Sunny Sandler comedy Don’t Say Good Luck, currently positioned fourth with 4.4million views.

Rounding out the top five candidates on the most popular movies chart this week is the Melissa McCarthy-Sandra Bullock action-comedy The Heat, with 4.1million views.

Following pretty closely on the international most popular movies chart is Tim Story’s laugh-out-loud comedy 72 HOURS with 3.7million views. While Kevin Hart’s comedic punch always really hits home, the film has specifically been home, ie, the weekly charts, for six weeks. That said, the most popular movies chart also has its fair share of debutantes.

Firstly, it is the 2021 American-Canadian disaster film 13 Minutes, with 3.4million views, currently ranked seventh on the international chart. Succeeding it is the Oscar-winning KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie Kang’s record-breaking animated musical, which has been at it for 63 non-stop weeks.

Coming to the final entries, the most popular movies chart has a tie between the fan-favourite animated comedy Shrek and the epic disaster movie 2012, which also just debuted on Netflix’s weekly chart with 2.7million views. And with those, it’s officially a wrap for the week!
