The 10 most popular films on Netflix this week: March 2024

The weekly rankings put out by Netflix offer an insight into what subscribers the world over have been watching in their droves, with the latest chart covering February 26th to March 3rd featuring an eclectic mix of originals, legacy titles, sequels, and animation.

Taking the top spot in its debut week is sci-fi sequel Code 8: Part II, which notched over 33million hours watched. The follow-up to the 2019 original has an interesting history, with the first instalment originally intended to be carried on as an episodic series on doomed streamer Quibi before Netflix stepped in to save the project from purgatory.

As a result of the second chapter’s arrival, the first Code 8 has also roared back into contention by accruing almost 13million hours, placing it fourth on this week’s rankings. Last week’s number one film Mea Culpa has slipped back into second as a result, with Adam Sandler’s new drama Spaceman occupying third in its first week after racking up 16 million hours.

Four of the next five spots are taken by animated features, with Despicable 3 and Minions continuing to outline the Illumination Entertainment’s franchise as an eminently popular property among Netflix users, with Universal’s Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken gaining 5.9million viewing hours this week.

The release of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two has convinced audiences to revisit the first half of the story, too, with the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel returning to the charts in eighth position as subscribers refresh their knowledge of Arrakis.

For the 11th consecutive week, the Chris Pratt-fronted video game favourite The Super Mario Bros. Movie maintains its position among Netflix’s ten top-viewed titles of the week to underline the enduring popularity of everyone’s favourite Italian plumber.

The tenth and final spot goes to South Korean revenge thriller Ballerina in something of a dark horse moment, considering the blood-soaked action flick originally premiered on Netflix back in October 2023.
