The 10 most popular films on Netflix this week: July 2023

The week of July 17th to July 23rd, audiences couldn’t get enough of the top ten picks on Netflix. There was action, romance, mystery, and more in these films. This week’s list also includes a fun mix of cerebral and mindless entertainment.

The Out-Laws held the top spot for three weeks straight. The ‘Meet the Parents’ romcom meets heist film, directed by Tyler Spindel, stars Adam DeVine, Pierce Brosnan, Ellen Barkin, Nina Dobrev, and Poorna Jaganathan.

Taking the second spot is Mark Mannucci’s Unknown: Cave of Bones, which takes us on a “Journey to South Africa’s Cradle of Mankind, where Paleoanthropologist Lee Berger has found the world’s oldest graveyard — which is not human. If Lee and his team can prove that this ancient, small-brained, ape-like creature practised complex burial rituals, it will change everything we know about hominid evolution and the origins of belief.”

They Cloned Tyrone made its mark in the third position, seamlessly blending science fiction and drama. Directed by Juel Taylor, the film blends genres to concoct a satirical blaxploitation drama. John Boyega, Jamie Foxx, and Teyonah Parris deliver powerful performances in the mind-bending thriller.

Next, we have the iconic feline swashbuckler in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, landing in the fourth position. Directed by Joel Crawford, this animated adventure-comedy brought together the voices of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Florence Pugh and more for a delightful family-friendly experience where Puss searches for the last wish to restore his nine lives.

At number five, The Deepest Breath follows a free diver who “trains to break a world record with the help of an expert safety diver.” This documentary has been a riveting spectacle.

Ride Along cruised into the sixth position, blending action and comedy. The film, directed by Tim Story, paired Kevin Hart and Ice Cube as an unlikely duo navigating crime-filled streets and family dynamics.

Man on Fire secured the seventh spot with its gripping action-thriller narrative. Directed by Tony Scott, Denzel Washington’s performance as a former CIA operative seeking redemption has got people hooked for four weeks. But when it comes to modern-day action extravaganza, Netflix has a winner in Extraction 2.

The sequel to Extraction is in eighth place this week and has been a mainstay on the global top ten list for six weeks. Chris Hemsworth reprised his role as Tyler Rake in this Sam Hargrave-directed film which will also have a third part.

Nimona, in the ninth position, enchanted audiences with its animated fantasy adventure. The feature presents a whimsical tale of a shapeshifter and her unlikely alliance with a villain.

Finally, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie rounds out the top ten list, offering an animated comedy headlined by Thomas Middleditch, Nick Kroll, Ed Helms, Kevin Hart, Jordan Peele, and Kristen Schaal, among others. Directed by David Soren, the film has raked in 4.6million hours viewed in one week.
