The 10 most popular films on Netflix this week: April 2023

With the Easter holidays drawing to a close, the world has returned to normality. For Netflix, this has meant a dip in viewing hours, but thanks to new releases, this plunge has been parachuted.

The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die always promised a lot for the streaming platform. In its opening week it has hit the fairly lofty height of 35.5million viewing hours to take this week’s top spot.

For context, last week Murder Mystery 2 weighed in with almost 60million hours so The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die is yet to prove a mammoth success, especially considering the big budget that Netflix threw at it. Nevertheless, it is new to the platform and still has time to balloon.

Elsewhere, Chupa remains in second place. The wholesome family film starring Christian Slater about the discovery of a mythical creature in a humble Mexican shed has proved a holiday hit for Netflix and is continuing to rack up the views with almost 30milion hours spent on it this week.

This week’s top ten also consists of three newcomers with Trolls World Tour making its debut on the list in fourth place, The Last Stand comes in at sixth, and Dr. Suess’ The Lorax slides into last place with a relatively slender 5.8million viewing hours.

Netflix will hope that The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die can pick up over the next few weeks, and that forthcoming new releases like the music biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody can give the faltering figures a boost.
