Ted Melfi will adapt Don DeLillo’s ‘The Underworld’ for Netflix

Filmmaker Ted Melfi confirmed at the Toronto International Film Festival that he will be adapting Don DeLillo’s popular novel The Underworld for Netflix.

This National Book Award-nominated 1997 novel follows the story of a waste management executive from the Bronx named Nick Shay as he navigates his way through various events that occurred in the world in the latter half of the 20th century. The book was also shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize.

Melfi’s other credits include the Melissa McCarthy-starring The Starling that is set to release on Netflix soon. It premiered at the Festival on Sunday. The film will be streaming on Netflix on September 24, 2021, and is a brilliant and surrealistic take on grief, tragedy, coping and loss.

Melfi has also written and directed the 2016 film Hidden Figures and has the writing credits for the 2017 flick Going In Style

However, an insider said that Melfi’s deal with Netflix has not yet been confirmed.
