‘Take Charge of My Heart’ ending explained: Does Na Bo-bae lose her powers?

Netflix K-dramas have a unique way of putting their own twist on fan-favourite genres, and that’s what Take Charge of My Heart brings to its rom-com DNA.

The story follows Na Bo-bae, an aspiring screenwriter with uncanny electrical powers whose touch can spark severe shocks. She got the powers after being struck by lightning as a child; ever since, she has lived in isolation, always wearing a glove to avoid harming others. Meanwhile, Baek Ho-rang, a third-generation heir to a powerful conglomerate resort group, has a closely guarded secret: an artificial heart dangerously low on charge.

When fate brings them together, they both realise that Bo-bae’s powers work differently for Ho-rang. Instead of threatening his life, it actually recharges his artificial heart. So they strike a deal: Bo-bae agrees to help him for three months in exchange for helping her tick off all the boxes on a romantic wishlist she always wanted to fulfil.

The three-month agreement makes room for genuine feelings to develop, and they eventually start dating for real. However, their union confronts a major obstacle when Ho-rang collapses on stage during his succession announcement.

Although Bo-bae arrives just in time to revive his heart, the doctor issues a terrifying warning that makes her pull away: Ho-rang’s artificial heart cannot take another strong electrical discharge. At the same time, the intense exertion takes away her electrical powers. But does she lose them entirely?

Does Na Bo-bae lose her powers in Take Charge of My Heart?

While Na Bo-bae distances herself from Baek Ho-rang in Take Charge of My Heart to protect him from her powers, she realises her powers have disappeared at her parents’ home. As her family tries to recall childhood memories to figure out what’s happening, the rom-com reveals that her powers had previously disappeared after a major exertion. But they always returned after a stretch, even if it was after 48 hours.

But things are different this time: over 48 hours go by without her electrical powers returning. Just as she confronts her new reality living without the powers that have shaped her life since childhood, a lovesick Ho-rang arrives looking for Bo-bae at her parents’ home, making it clear that she’s her priority above all.

Fearing her powers may not be entirely gone, Bo-bae still tries to push him away, explaining that she cannot stay with him, especially knowing she could potentially harm him. However, Ho-rang is not someone to give up so easily. Not only does Ho-rang win her over, but he also wins over her parents, who eventually convince him to return to Seoul and finish what he started.

Bo-bae makes an important confession: she’s scared to live a life she hasn’t lived before, which is without powers. Even so, she decides to go with him, culminating in the much-awaited union. Although the show doesn’t explicitly clarify whether her powers are gone for good, she feels a small shock when she’s with Ho-rang at the end. She confirms it is static electricity, but the good news is: it doesn’t hurt.
