‘Stranger Things' actor talks potential Steve-Dustin spin-off

After months of eager anticipation, Netflix is finally releasing the first volume of Stranger Things season four on May 27th, 2022. After the cast and the crew teased the fans relentlessly about the upcoming season, releasing photos and videos, the wait is finally over.

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things is a nostalgic ode to the 1980s weaved within a Stephen King-like premise that abounds in sci-fi elements, monsters, interdimensional time travel and unusually brave and mature kids on bicycles.

While the show has a wide variety of characters with their individual quirks and charms, Gaten Matarazzo’s Dustin Henderson and Joe Keery’s Steve Harrington have long been celebrated by fans due to their brilliant on-screen camaraderie and bromance.

Steve and Dustin are some of the best characters on the show, although Steve is initially an asshole in the series with a cold, indifferent attitude and an affinity for bullying, he gradually earns his redemption by showing his incredible courage and kindness.

Steve and Dustin become friends, with the former often coaching the younger regarding hairstyle and women. When asked if there could be a spin-off series based on them and their brilliant bond, Matarazzo did not entirely rebuff the claim. However, according to him, the whole spin-off would have to have a unique format to keep the audience invested in their escapades.

He said, “I think a Dustin/Steve spinoff would be good if it were in like a weird niche format like they didn’t do a full show of it, like a WandaVision-type thing or a web series-type thing where on YouTube, there’s like weekly episodes of little hijinks they get into.”

He continued, “Every now and again, like a skit show, that would be great. I don’t know if a Dustin and Steve full spinoff is sustainable. What are they going to do for a whole season, just them?”

The upcoming season of Stranger Things is admittedly quite “dark” according to multiple cast members and the producer, Shawn Levy himself.

The returning cast will include Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Matarazzo, Keery, David Harbour, Noah Schnapp, Winona Ryder, Caleb McLaughlin and others, besides a series of new cast members.
