Steve Buscemi to join cast of Netflix's 'Wednesday'

Steve Buscemi is reportedly set to join the cast of Netflix’s favourite supernatural comedy Wednesday for the highly anticipated second season of the show.

The actor’s role in the series is yet to be revealed, but sources told Variety of his involvement, suggesting that he might be in line to take over from Gwendoline Christie to play the principal at Nevermore Academy, the school for outcasts attended by Wednesday Adams.

Since making his debut in the mid-1980s, Buscemi has gained fame and acclaim working with the likes of Quentin Tarantino and the Coen brothers. He starred in Tarantino’s first film, Reservoir Dogs, and appeared in some of the Coen’s most notable works, including Fargo and The Big Lebowski.

Borrowing from Charles Addams’ famed cartoon characters, Wednesday follows Wednesday Addams as she contends with her superhuman powers and shrugs off her classmates. Jenna Ortega stars as the titular character, while Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán appear as Morticia and Gomez Addams.

Wednesday isn’t the first time the fiction family have appeared on our screens. Addams’ cartoon characters were adapted to television in the mid-1960s by David Levy, and later to film in the 1990s by Barry Sonnenfeld.

Ortega is set to return to the show as Wednesday, but she is also set to expand her role beyond acting. As well as appearing in front of the camera, she will take on a producing role for the second season.

The first season of Wednesdayimmediately endeared itself to audiences when it aired in 2022, as viewers endlessly attempted to recreate Ortega’s iconic dance moves and gothic sense of style. The show enjoyed award success, too, taking home four Emmys in 2023 for production design, costuming, makeup, and theme music.

Meanwhile, Buscemi has been adding to his own filmography with ventures into voice acting and filmmaking. In 2022, he returned to the Hotel Transylvania series and directed Tessa Thompson in The Listener. Earlier in the year, Buscemi also made an appearance in the final season of Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.

With his wide-ranging experience in both comedy and drama, Buscemi seems like a fitting casting to take over from Christie as the head of Nevermore Academy. He’s certain to bring both humour and horror to the role, set to rival Ortega’s frosty lead performance.

A release date for the second season of the show is yet to be confirmed. Revisit the teaser for season one of Wednesday below.
