Stephen King praises Netflix movie ‘Rebel Ridge’

Over the past few years, many movies by prominent directors have been made in partnership with Netflix, with the streamer distributing titles onto their platform soon after release. Several films, like Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, have even taken home Oscars.

By striking deals with the streaming service, these filmmakers know that this will guarantee a large audience. A recent movie to have been released straight to Netflix is Rebel Ridge, directed by Jeremy Saulnier, who also took charge of the screenplay, editing, and production.

He previously helmed Green Room, which followed a punk band who found themselves the unfortunate targets of a group of neo-Nazis. Rebel Ridge is also a thriller which deals with the corruption of a certain group, however, in this instance, it’s a police force.

The movie centres around Aaron Pierre’s Terry, a man who goes to bail out his cousin from jail, only to have his money seized by the police who believe he has illegally obtained the cash. Drama ensues as he fights for justice, with plenty of thrills for audiences to sink their teeth into.

Rebel Ridge also stars AnnaSophia Robb, Don Johnson, Emory Cohen, David Denman, and Steve Zissis. Since its release, it has enjoyed great success, finding praise with both critics and Netflix subscribers.

The movie has found itself a famous fan, too. Stephen King, who is no stranger to movie criticism, having had many of his stories adapted for the screen, took to Twitter/X to share his opinion on the film.

King seems to be a big fan of the movie, boldly declaring, “REBEL RIDGE: If this is a Netflix original, it’s one of the best. A thinking man’s RAMBO. No diss to David Morrell.”

Evidently, comparing the movie to Rambo, the 1980s franchise led by Sylvester Stallone, is high praise. King’s comment could help to propel Rebel Ridge to even higher heights, which is impressive, considering that the movie is already sitting at number two in the top 10 most-watched charts on Netflix.

It was been in the chart for three weeks, and in the past week, it has amassed 36.7 million watched hours. Currently, only Uglies, starring Joey King and Laverne Cox, is in the lead, with 45.6 million hours viewed.
