'Sex and the City' premiering on Netflix in April

Sex and the City has received a premiere date for Netflix despite being an HBO show.

Previously, all six seasons of the iconic HBO romantic comedy-drama have recently only been available on its streaming site, Max, but now it has been revealed that it will be coming to Netflix for the first time on April 1st. It will also still be on Max.

This means that next month, all 94 episodes of the original show, which ran from 1998 to 2004, based on Candace Bushnell’s newspaper column and 1996 book anthology of the same name, will be available on Netflix. Notably, the series stars Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall, and follows a group of four female friends in New York City, as they explore love, friendship, sex and all the other idiosyncracies of life.

It was reported last July that HBO’s parent company. Warner Bros. Discovery made an agreement with Netflix last July, which included a licencing deal for several of their series. These include Band of BrothersThe PacificSix Feet UnderBallersInsecure and True Blood. Recently, Bushnell said she will earn nothing from the new HBO/Netflix deal.

In November 2023, HBO Chief Casey Bloys explained the decision to license their content to Netflix, telling The Hollywood Reporter it’s about “balance”.

“We have to be protective of the shows that we have and are successful,” he said. “But, you know, I’ve worked in television long enough that syndication used to be, that was the pot of gold. That was the brass ring that meant that your show was gonna go on and have a life after its initial run and live for decades.”

Continuing: “So the idea of selling a show outside of your ecosystem wasn’t an unusual idea, obviously at HBO we did it a lot with Band of Brothers, which was on, I think, History network, and EntourageCurb Your EnthusiasmSex and the City. We basically sold everything, so it’s not a new concept.”

Outside of the standing Sex and the City deal, the two movies and sequel series, And Just Like That, will only be available to stream on Max.
