RuPaul joins new Netflix show 'Chicago Party Aunt'

Drag queen and all-around cultural icon RuPaul Andre Charles, known simply as RuPaul, has been brought onboard for Netflix’s latest adult animation series, Chicago Party Aunt.

The upcoming 16-episode animation features the reality TV star of RuPaul’s Drag Race as the owner of an upmarket beauty salon. Their voice will appear alongside The Book of Mormon’s Rory O’Malley and Superstore’s Lauren Ash who will also voice the lead character, Diane Dunbrowski.

“An ageing party girl with a heart of gold and a penchant for wine and ’80s rock,” Diane is described as a wild central character, whilst O’Malley is due to voice her nephew Daniel, visiting Diane for a while on a gap year.

Executive producer’s Ike Barinholtz and Da’Vine Joy Randolph also have supporting roles in the animation, with the production team behind Big Mouth, ‘Titmouth’ heading up the show. RuPaul’s involvement follows her previous collaboration with Netflix in AJ and the Queen, a badly received comedy-drama that was cancelled after just 10 episodes.

With RuPaul’s Drag Race performing consistently well for the streaming service, it’s no wonder that Netflix have reached out to the cultural icon to be a part of their new programme. It follows the release of Tiger Queens: The Tiger King Musical in late March of 2021 that featured queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race, Willam, Heidi N Closet and Kim Chi, as they take on the influential Netflix documentary Tiger King.

Chicago Party Aunt hits Netflix on Friday, September 17.
