Ron Howard’s ‘Avedon’ traces the life and legacy of the 20th-century photographer
Photographer Richard Avedon’s era-defining legacy is made of the famous and the anonymous alike. And later this year, it will be celebrated through Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard’s highly anticipated documentary, Avedon, on Netflix.
By the time of his demise in 2004, Avedon was easily one of the most influential photographers of the 20th-century, whose fashion and portrait work helped shape America’s perspective of beauty and style.
Howard’s Avedon premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and now the documentary is scheduled to hit Netflix shelves in a still-undisclosed window. The project’s arrival strengthens the streamer’s collaboration with Imagine Documentaries, the production company behind the film. The companies previously joined forces for Marty, Life is Short, which earned three Primetime Emmy nominations, including ‘Outstanding Documentary Special’.
Although a release date has yet to be revealed, Netflix has given a synopsis for Avedon. The film chronicles the artist’s extraordinary life and legacy, which helped re-engineer the world around him.
Based on exclusive access to his personal archives, including never-before-seen stills and fresh interviews with his closest collaborators, the upcoming documentary details how crucial Avedon’s vision was to revamp the visual landscape of the 20th-century and “why even the most iconic image is only half the story.”
Speaking of his brainchild, Howard said, “I’ve always been drawn to stories that help us better understand remarkable people… Richard Avedon was an artist whose work continues to resonate not only because of the extraordinary images he created, but because of the humanity and curiosity behind them.”

Imagine Documentaries and Fifth Season have co-produced Avedon in association with the Richard Avedon Foundation. Brian Grazer, Howard, Dallas Brennan Rexer, Sara Bernstein, Christopher St John, and Justine Wilkes serve as producers, with Meredith Kaulfers, Mary Lisio, Chris Rice, and Graham Taylor executive producing the project.
