The release date for season two of ‘The Diplomat’ has arrived

Fans of The Diplomat, one of Netflix’s most surprising recent successes, will be happy to hear that season two’s release date has been announced. It will be available on the streamer next month.

The Diplomat was such a success that just 11 days after the first season arrived on Netflix and went to the top of its charts – where it would stay for four weeks – the platform confirmed that it would be returning. This prompted much excitement after the explosive finale of season one, which seemed to be setting up more political intrigue.

In proper form, production started on season two only two months after the first episode aired on April 20th, 2023, which suggests that Netflix were fast-tracking the show and wanted to replicate the first season’s success.

They had good reason to as well. It wasn’t just a number one hit on their site, racking up 173million viewing hours in that time, but it was also nominated for ‘Best Television Series – Drama’ at the Golden Globes with star Keri Russell shortlisted in the ‘Best Actress – Television Series Drama’ category.

Notably, The Diplomat follows the US ambassador to the UK, Kate Wyler -played by Russell – who navigates an international crisis and forges new alliances, all the while managing her failing marriage to fellow diplomat, Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell.

It has now been confirmed that season two of The Diplomat is arriving on October 31st, 2024. While there will be no links in the show to spooky season, it certainly arrives at a prime time to catch swathes of viewers as they hunker down for the cold months. In another exciting twist, unlike most returning Netflix shows, it will not be split into separate parts such as with their flagship title, Stranger Things. The only date that has been announced is October 31st.

The synopsis for season two reads: “A deadly explosion in the heart of London shatters US Ambassador Kate Wyler’s world (Keri Russell). Struggling to rebuild the lives that broke and the team that split apart, Kate’s worst fears unfold: The attack that brought her to the UK didn’t come from a rival nation, it came from inside the British government. “

Continuing: “As Kate chases the truth, her only real ally is her almost-ex-husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), very much alive, and very much involved. She faces a fraught marriage, a complex dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and a threatening visit from Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).”
