‘One Tree Hill’ to return for Netflix sequel with original cast
The teen drama One Tree Hill is set to make a comeback after 12 years, with the original cast heading to Netflix to make a sequel.
One Tree Hill ran for nine successful seasons from 2003 to 2012. It first ran on WB and then moved to CW. Set in a fictional town in North Carolina, the show followed the lives of several teenagers and captured the drama that surrounded them as they came of age.
The show was a massive success and is missed by fans worldwide, so much so that Netflix believes it’s now the right time to give people a sequel. A reboot of the series is reportedly in the works as the original stars, Daneel Ackles, Hilarie Burton and Sophia Bush, are confirmed to be reprising their roles in the series. They will also be acting as executive producers on the show.
It remains unclear whether co-stars Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty, who originally were half-brothers in the series, will reprise their roles. However, Murray clearly isn’t averse to revisiting old storylines, as he is currently filming the Freaky Friday sequel, aptly titled Freakier Friday, which stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan.
While the storyline of the One Tree Hill sequel remains a mystery, reports indicate that it will take place 20 years after the original series ended, showing the cast as adults and raising children of their own. It will be interesting to see whether or not the dynamic of the show changes with the cast assuming a much wiser angle.
Bush, who played Brooke Davis in the original series, announced the news on social media on August 30th. “What if you really can go back home?” She wrote, “If there’s an opportunity to team with brilliant creatives and build a space where all our friends can show off their talents? Own our history? Reclaim our turf? Honor our fans? Sign us up.”
She signed off with, “There’s only one Tree Hill, after all. And you – the #OTHfam – have shown us that it’s not just an idea. It really is the place where ‘Everything’s better and everything’s safe.’”
The news comes as a fun hit of nostalgia for many people. The popular TV series is set to return and give people a full update on what their favourite characters have been up to. We are still waiting for a trailer and information surrounding a release date.
