Nicolas Cage movie with near perfect critics score arrives on Netflix
The 2021 crime drama, Pig, starring Nicolas Cage, has recently arrived on Netflix.
Having received almost universally positive reviews from critics at the time of its release and a score of 97 per cent on film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has now arrived on the streaming platform due to popular demand.
The thriller, in which Cage stars as a former chef living in the wilderness of Oregon, is widely regarded as one of the actor’s greatest films in recent years. He delivers a masterful performance in the role.
His character, Rob, supports himself through foraging for truffles with the assistance of a pig which he has been caring for. However, when a gang attacks Rob, they depart with his porcine friend, and the remainder of the film chronicles his mission to retrieve the animal and bring it back home.
As he ventures away from his home in the woods, Rob becomes increasingly entrenched in the darkness of the city where he used to live and work. Throughout the film, the audience sees him grapple with past trauma related to his past life as he tries to find the pig.
The film, which also stars Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin, was written and directed by American filmmaker Michael Sarnoski in his debut feature-length production. He has since directed A Quiet Place: Day One, which is the third film and a prequel in the A Quiet Place series.
Cage has gone through a recent resurgence in the past few years, appearing in many critically acclaimed films after having experienced a downturn in favour in the 2000s and 2010s. Some of his recent efforts that have received praise include Mandy, Dream Scenario, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
In 2023, Cage hinted that he may soon retire from acting in films, claiming in an interview with Uproxx: “I feel I’ve pretty much said what I’ve had to say with cinema. And I’d like to leave on a high note and say: ‘adios.’”
Cage is set to appear in a number of other films which are currently in production with no set release date, and it is unknown whether he will choose to step away from the film industry after he has finished his involvement in these upcoming films.
