Netflix gears up for a new Tyler Perry urban drama ‘Doing Life’
Netflix and Tyler Perry’s ongoing creative partnership has produced relentless hits from A Fall from Grace and The Six Triple Eight to Straw and Ruth & Boaz. And while subscribers have their eyes on the upcoming Why Did I Get Married Again? and ‘Tis So Sweet, Perry is gearing up for another urban drama, Doing Life.
Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves have helmed the all-new Perry story, written, directed, and produced by the 56-year-old multi-hyphenate, which follows a single mother and an ex-convict who develop an unlikely alliance.
Equal parts gritty and gripping, Tyler Perry’s Doing Life is an upcoming film that revolves around a single mother’s determined fight for survival and a reformed ex-con with unparalleled and repressed skills who form an unexpected connection. While Perry is attached to the project in several roles, the Netflix Original movie is co-produced by him, Angi Bones, and Tony L Strickland.
Although Netflix has kept further plot details under wraps, it has unveiled the star-studded roster set to bring Perry’s story to screen. The All American: Homecoming star Baker and The Six Triple Eight actor Reeves have been roped in to portray the single mother and ex-con seeking redemption, respectively.
Meanwhile, Tamberla Perry from They Cloned Tyrone, Karen Obilom from Doom Patrol, Jasmine Sargent from Dynasty, and Danielle Mone Truitt from Law & Order: Organised Crime will also appear in yet-undisclosed roles in the forthcoming project.
Unsurprisingly, with so much information yet to be unveiled, the whereabouts of Doing Life’s trailer and first-look photos also remain shrouded in mystery, meaning hawk-eyed fans will have to hold their horses a little longer.
According to an April 2026 What’s on Netflix report, production for Tyler Perry’s Doing Life began in March 2025, and the movie was officially announced in April that year. However, the streaming giant remains tight-lipped about the urban drama’s potential release window.
Although the A Madea Homecoming star has a huge lineup of movies and series slated for 2026 and beyond, the rollout details are scarce at the moment. That said, while viewers may have to wait a little for more information about his yet-to-be-released projects, Beauty in Black is returning next week to bring the much-awaited dose of Perry’s theatrics.
