New ‘Red Light, Green Light’ doll revealed in trailer for ‘Squid Game’ season three
After airing the second season of its hit drama series Squid Game in December, Netflix has shared a teaser for the third season of the popular show, which is scheduled to arrive on the platform this year.
The second season of the Korean survival show arrived on Netflix on December 26th, three years after the first series aired on the platform in September 2021. It quickly became one of the streamer’s most popular shows before sparking a widespread cultural phenomenon that included themed merchandise, viral trends, and broader sociological discussions.
The first series followed 456 contestants who became involved in the games due to their personal and financial debts. They battled for an extraordinary cash prize, embarking on life-or-death challenges along the way to the end. The second series continued the disturbing journey of the main character, Seong Gi-hun, on his quest to dismantle the organisation that initiated the games.
The first series’ success became such a hit that it initially surpassed many hit shows, including Bridgerton while winning a series of awards and accolades praising its narrative and the acting of its main and supporting characters.
The trailer for the third season, which runs at just 15 seconds, continues the harrowing association with the iconic Red Light, Green Light doll with a new one named Chul-su, who is revealed in the clip facing the original perpetrator, Young-hee. Although the clip doesn’t show what happens next, the tension builds enough to tease the higher stakes defining the next instalment.
A release date for the third series has yet to be announced, but Netflix will undoubtedly seek to capitalise on the success of the first and second series with new characters and plot devices guaranteed to achieve the same level of spine-tingling allure as the previous episodes.
Last week, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk also shared some details about the third series, suggesting that, once the second one arrives, they plan to move considerably quickly with the next instalment, unlike the gap between seasons one and two. He said: “After Season two launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season three soon.”
Adding: “I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year.”
