Netflix viewers are horrified over steamy movie ‘Burning Betrayal’
Many viewers are complaining about the Netflix film Burning Betrayal being too explicit. They have even said that the ‘pornographic scenes’ made them so uncomfortable that they had to switch it off entirely. This 2023 film is an adaptation of a book of the same name by Sue Hecker, who also wrote the 2016 novel, Tutor, which garnered her widespread popularity.
Burning Betrayal is a Brazilian, Portuguese-language film directed by Diego Freitas and stars Leandro Lima, Giovanna Lancellotti, known for her role in Irrational Heart, and Camilla de Lucas. It follows Lancellotti as Barbara, an accountant who finds out that her fiancé cheated on her. Following this, she begins a new relationship with a man named Marco, played by Lima, and a new set of events begins to unfold. Diego Freitas is known for films such as Beyond the Universe, David’s Secret, and Way Back Home.
The raunchy thriller’s explicit moments have been too overwhelming for some of its viewers. They have been complaining that the film is mostly driven by sex and less so by a story, which made a large chunk of the audience widely uncomfortable, as they were hoping for a more compelling narrative.
Decider described the film as “more erotic than thrilling, and more boring than erotic”. The film has been criticised for a formulaic plot with predictable character arcs and twists. Moreover, the exaggerated emphasis on the eroticism of the films took away any minuscule chance of an intriguing storyline.
The film has garnered a lot of mixed reviews over time. Some have enjoyed it as well, crediting its cinematography, performances, and music, with some reviews saying, “Just two people riding motorcycles and having sex. Did I watch it five times? You bet I did”.
Burning Betrayal has a luxurious visual appeal with its high production value evident from the sharp cinematography and background settings. The chemistry between the protagonists has been especially applauded, with viewers even expressing a desire for a sequel: “The film is very sensual with an impactful story that left with the possibility of continuation”.
These mixed reviews reflect that despite its explicit scenes, some people were in it for the sensual storyline, including themes of passion, crime, and love. The film seems to have found two extremes of reception, with some regarding it as a guilty pleasure and others as a tasteless waste.
