Netflix to stream Labor Day hot dog eating contest

When we open the Netflix application, we expect to find movies and television series. Yet, the platform will soon stream a live hot dog eating contest, continuing its foray into ‘live sports’ broadcasting.

In 2023, the streaming service broadcast The Netflix Cup, a live sporting event in which golfers from Full Swing and racing drivers from Formula 1: Drive to Survive teamed up to compete in a series of matches.

Now, they’re going to be broadcasting a less athletic sport – hot dog eating. Chestnut vs Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef is set to air on Labor Day (September 2nd), with Joey ‘Jaws’ Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi going head to head to see who can consume the most sausages.

Chesnut is currently the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest champion. His record is a staggering 76 hot dogs in just ten minutes and 16 seconds. According to the Major Eating League, he is the world’s number one competitive eater, but he still wants to be challenged. He’s going to be reuniting with his long-time rival, Takeru Kobayashi, whom he beat in 2009 – the last time they ever competed against each other.

They’re ready to engage in some (un)healthy competition at this year’s showdown, upping the ante by allowing it to be broadcast live on Netflix, the biggest streaming service in the world.

In a press release, Chesnut said: “I know that fans have waited a long time for another chapter of our rivalry, and I can’t wait for our massive showdown live on Netflix! It’s time to give the people what they want!”

This isn’t the only live sporting event Netflix will add to its repertoire. In November, it will air the highly anticipated boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, which will surely attract a large number of viewers who will tune in to watch the event play out in real time.

If you’re more into food-based competitions, you’ll only have to wait a few months to see if Chesnut or Kobayashi comes out on top. In the recent Netflix documentary Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut, Kobayashi said, “Retiring for me will only happen after I take him down one last time. This rivalry has been brewing for a long time. Competing against Joey live on Netflix means fans all over the world can watch me knock him out.”
