Netflix teases first look at 'Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical'

Netflix has offered the first look at Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical where Dame Emma Thompson plays the terrifying Miss Trunchbull. The new trailer shows the Award-winning actress heading the ensemble cast that features a series of famous British actors.

Adapted from the Tony and Oliver Award-winning musical based on Roald Dahl’s book, Matilda, the live-action adaptation is written by Dennis Kelly and will use songs from the original musical by Tim Minchin.

Newcomer Alicia Weir plays the titular character, following in the footsteps of Mara Wilson. She is joined by Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham, Sindhu Vee and Andrea Riseborough among others.

Graham and Riseborough will play her parents while Vee will be seen as Mrs Phelps, the librarian. Lynch will star as Matilda’s kind teacher, Miss Honey.

According to previously leaked pictures, Strictly Come Dancing star Aljaz Skorjanec will be seen in a possible cameo. He was seen driving the red convertible car that Danny DeVito as Harry Wormwood had in the 1996 film.

With a tight bun and a characteristic trench coat, Thompson looks formidable as the bullish headteacher as she talks about taming the “rebels” in the school. From bullying Matilda to flinging off a child by her pigtails, she is later seen asking the children if the “child is alive”.

Thompson will surely do great justice to the role, following Pam Ferris in the original 1996 film

The film will release globally on Netflix in December 2022 while also getting an exclusive theatrical run in the United Kingdom.
