Netflix shares new first-look images of 'Heartstopper' season three

Heartstopper fans have been anticipating the third season of the beloved show ever since the cliffhanger ending of season two, which aired in August 2023.

In the final episode of the previous season, we see Charlie about to send a text message to Nick reading “I love you,” but he hesitates, leaving fans wondering if he actually sent it or not. The episode also saw Nick come out online and Charlie discussing his previous mental health struggles and self-harm with Nick.

The second season was acclaimed, with critics praising the show’s realistic depiction of adolescence and the trials and tribulations of coming of age as a gay teenager. Balancing optimism with the harsher moments of growing up, such as bullying, mental health issues and the struggles of being openly gay, the show has subsequently garnered a cult fanbase.

Season three is going to follow Charlie, Nick and their friends as they go to college, allowing the show to explore more mature issues. According to Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman, “While Heartstopper will always celebrate the joyful and point towards hope, I’m really excited that we are allowing the tone of the show to mature alongside our beloved characters growing up.”

They added, “Mental health, sex, university ambitions, and more: Nick, Charlie, and the Heartstopper teens are getting older, learning more about themselves and each other, and experiencing new desires, new fears, and new joys as they approach adulthood.”

Netflix have now released some exclusive images of the third season, teasing a new character, Oliver Spring. The character is the cousin of Charlie and his sister, Tori, and is portrayed by Jensen Clayden.

New photos show the gang at the zoo, Charlie sharing his bed with Tori, and various other moments between the characters that suggest there will be equal parts love and drama in the new season.

Oseman told the streaming service, “The key to each season is thinking about each couple and how their relationship can progress in some way.” Alongside the regular cast (although several actors, like Olivia Colman, will not be returning), there will be new additions from stars like Jonathan Bailey and Eddie Marsan.

Heartstopper season three will arrive on Netflix on October 3rd, with the first episode titled ‘Love’.
