Netflix share trailer for new documentary series ‘Senna’

A trailer has just been released for the incredibly anticipated new mini-series Senna, which will explore the rise and tragic demise of the Formula 1 racer Ayrton Senna. It will be available to stream on Netflix at the end of November.

The six-part series comes 14 years after Asif Kapadia made the documentary, also called Senna, that used archive footage of the racing driver to tell his story. It was highly praised, but Netflix has taken a different approach, instead choosing to use actors to explore Senna’s racing career.

Gabriel Leone will be playing the main role, having previously starred in Michael Mann’s acclaimed biographical sports drama Ferrari. Alongside Leone, Alice Wegmann will play his first wife, Lílian de Vasconcellos Souza, while Skins star Kaya Scodelario will play a journalist named Laura.

The cast also includes actors such as Camila Márdila, Julia Foti, Christian Malheiros, Hugo Bonemer, Susana Ribeiro, and Pâmela Tomé.

An official synopsis for the show reads (via Netflix Tudum), “The six-episode series will showcase Senna’s journey of triumphs, disappointments, joys, and sorrows, unveiling his personality and personal relationships. It begins with the start of the three-time Formula 1 champion’s motor racing career, when he moves to England to compete in Formula Ford, and continues to his fatal accident in Imola, Italy, during the San Marino Grand Prix.”

Senna is directed by Vicente Amorim and Júlia Rezende, with Amorim also serving as the showrunner. The racing driver’s family has greenlit the series, which has helped the show’s creators to accurately capture Senna’s legacy.

The Formula One driver passed away in 1994 during the San Marino Grand Prix. Until that point, however, he was one of the most successful drivers, winning the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship three times and becoming the champion of 41 Grands Prix.

He also had a strong rivalry with Alain Prost which will be explored in the show, with Matt Mella playing the French driver. Senna will also spotlight some of his personal relationships, such as with his first wife and various girlfriends, including Xuxa Meneghel and Adriane Galisteu, the latter of whom he was with at the time of his death.

“Ayrton Senna has a legacy that spans generations and boundaries and Netflix is proud to take this new look at the man behind the driver to subscribers in more than 190 countries,” says Maria Angela de Jesus, head of international productions at Netflix Brazil.

It will be available to stream on November 29th.
