Netflix releases first look photos of ‘Russian Doll’ season 2

Netflix has unveiled some first look photos for the upcoming second season of Russian Doll that features the protagonist played by Natasha Lyonne and Schitt’s Creek actress Annie Murphy in brand new avatars.

Murphy, who played the quirky character of Alexis on Schitt’s Creek, is seen sporting a wavy hairstyle with big round glasses and is clad in seemingly formal all-black attire. While her character has not yet been revealed, she is playing a pivotal role in the second season. According to Lyonne, Murphy’s character is “the heart of the show” and “definitely one of the good guys”.

Created by Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland, the show sees Lyonne as the lead character, Nadia Vulvokov. In the first season, Nadia is stuck in a continuous-time loop where she returns every time she dies, with her decisions affecting every outcome.

As she struggles in this video-game-like maze to find an escape, she meets a man named Alan Zaveri. Together, they navigate this mind-boggling, sticky situation and try to find a way out of the endless continuum.

A perfect balance of cynicism, existentialism and black comedy, the show raises essential questions regarding mortality, morality and ethics. Its darkly hilarious premise has garnered quite the fan following and featured Charlie Barnett as Alan Zaveri.

Barnett is seen sporting a distinctive moustache in the second season. Other characters like Greta Lee’s Maxine are also seen making a return.

The second season will be set nearly four years after the first season’s events, wherein Alan and Nadia will chance upon a time portal in New York that will allow them to come to terms with their past. Lyonne has promised a “wild ride”, talking about how the second season “is deep, and deeply off-the-wall.”

Talking about how the season is a “puzzle box”, she said, “With my whole heart, I hope that people watch it all and see where the game goes and lands. I can’t believe we pulled it off.”

She also spoke of how the production of the second season was a brilliant creative procedure: “We all pushed ourselves to the limit of what we thought we could make happen visually and through the storytelling,” she said.

The rest of the cast includes Carolyn Michelle Smith, who is known for having starred in Luke Cage, House of Cards and more. District 9‘s Sharlto Copley is also a part of this cast.

Russian Doll season two is presumed to have a spring 2022 release. Take a look at the photos below:
