Netflix just added four seasons of one of TV’s most underrated crime dramas: ‘Will Trent’

Netflix has been behaving like a total lunatic these past few months with its habit of snapping up crime shows. First, it brought FROM to the party and then followed it up with Murder in a Small Town. Oh, and since one murder show wasn’t enough and Netflix clearly knows its viewers well, it got us all Mistletoe Murders, and now, the platform has brought us – drum rolls, please – the rather brilliant crime drama Will Trent. Pfft, some of us have jobs, Netflix!

But listen, we are willing to forgive this latest act of sabotage because Will Trent deserves every inch of attention coming its way. The ABC crime drama finally made it to the Netflix US catalogue on November 3rd. It has spent four seasons delivering some brilliant detective work, and yet, it’s sad to see that the name barely gets any mention when people discuss television’s finest crime procedurals.

Based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling novels, the series stars Ramón Rodríguez as Will Trent, a Georgia Bureau of Investigation special agent who has a knack for spotting clues his colleagues have overlooked. Abandoned as a baby and raised in Atlanta’s foster care system, Will had a pretty miserable childhood, and having dyslexia didn’t help either. But underestimate this detective at your own peril!

Wait, don’t go imagining the hard-drinking Jim Hopper from the early seasons of Stranger Things, because Will has an immaculate wardrobe and an endearing Southern charm. But the showstealer is his Chihuahua named Betty, who’s very dear to him. It’s weird how people who spend their days dealing with gruesome crime scenes can be so devoted to the tiniest of creatures.

But solving murders isn’t what Will Trent is all about. Take Will’s relationship with Angie Polaski, his childhood friend and on-again, off-again romantic interest. There’s also Faith Mitchell, Will’s investigative partner, who brings some much-needed pushback to his eccentric working methods. She doesn’t let him get away with every strange little habit of his, and watching them learn to work together is more than half the fun.

Now, are we saying Will Trent has completely changed the crime drama game? Oh, don’t be ridiculous! Some of the investigations require you to switch your brain off for a bit, and the personal drama can get a bit “soap opera-ish” sometimes, but you always, always end up giving a damn about these characters. You’re invested in what happens to them even when nobody’s solving a murder, and that can be considered a big win for Will Trent.

And if you’re worried about getting attached to a show only for it to get cancelled, fear not! It’s ABC, not Netflix, calling the shots here, and the network has already renewed Will Trent for season five, so there’s more to come.

For now, four seasons are sitting on Netflix, begging for your attention. Go on, give Rodríguez and his impeccably dressed detective a chance.
