Everything you need to know about ‘Murder in a Small Town’, the crime drama now on Netflix

Murder in a Small Town has taken a long route to Netflix, and now that it’s here, it won’t leave you thirsty with just one season. That’s right, this very intriguingly titled show comes with two seasons, so be prepared for a binge. The crime drama first premiered on Fox in 2024, so what Netflix is offering here is not a debut but a second wind, and, frankly, that’s all it needed.

Rossif Sutherland leads opposite Kristin Kreuk, and if Smallville is where you know her from, fair enough, but this is a different kettle of fish. Here she is caught up in a coastal crime drama where romance is not the subplot anyone might mistake it for. Murder investigations and romance – looks like Netflix knew what it was doing!

There is no shortage of material behind it either, because the show comes from L.R. Wright’s nine-book Alberg and Cassandra mystery series. Nine books? Blimey, looks like all of us are in for a long run with this one.

And this is not one of those shows where you reach the end and discover the whole thing has been put out to pasture, because two seasons are ready to binge, and season three has already been ordered. Not a bad time to begin the watch, eh?

What is Murder in a Small Town about?

Karl Alberg, played by Sutherland, leaves Minneapolis after years of big-city police work and becomes police chief in Gibsons, British Columbia, hoping the change of pace might do him some good. Famous last words. The so-called placid seaside community has more secrets than a confession box, and season one puts Karl straight to work when Carlyle Burke is found bludgeoned to death. Guess who’s the prime suspect: his estranged brother-in-law, George Wilcox.

Away from the station, Karl meets librarian Cassandra Lee through a dating app, and their relationship becomes the connective tissue between cases rather than some sideline romance.

Season two gives Karl a bigger patch to cover along the Sunshine Coast, but his department still has the same limited resources. Meanwhile, Cassandra joins the town council, so local politics starts following them home too.

Who is in the cast?

Sutherland and Kreuk anchor the show as Karl and Cassandra, while Mya Lowe plays officer Edwina Yen, and Aaron Douglas appears as Sergeant Sid Sokolowski. The guest bench has some serious clout too, with James Cromwell in season one and Marcia Gay Harden joining season two as Gibson’s mayor Christie Holman.

What books is Murder in a Small Town based on?

The series draws from late Canadian author L.R. Wright’s nine-book Alberg and Cassandra mystery series, which began with The Suspect in 1985.

That literary background lets the show mix murder with character drama, as Karl’s cases keep colliding with Cassandra’s already complicated life.

Will there be a Murder in a Small Town Season 3?

Definitely! Viewers coming through Netflix are not heading towards a dead end. Fox renewed Murder in a Small Town for season three in May 2026, with Peter Gallagher joining as Rod Finlayson.
