Netflix dives deep into gaming with 80 new games on the way
The idea of going to Netflix to dive headfirst into a brand-new set of games isn’t particularly comforting. But the streaming platform has been working on its interactive gaming options for some time and now has 80 new titles in the works.
More commonly associated with making blockbuster movies like The Power of the Dog and culture-shifting series like Stranger Things, Netflix has heavily invested in its gaming arm and has now unveiled 80 games which are in development.
Starting this month, the streaming giant will begin releasing a game a month to its subscribers. With over 80 titles on the way, it’s going to be a long time before your gaming itch isn’t scratched by the big red N.
Gregory K Peters, Netflix’s co-CEO said of the new aim for the platform: “We’ve launched over 100 games so far. We’ve seen what works, what doesn’t work. We’re refining our program to do more of what is working with the 80-plus games that we currently have in development.”
Most of the games already launched are third party games like Grand Theft Auto, Football Manager, and more. As well as the game, the platform also hosts interactive stories for their shows such as Perfect Match and Love Is Blind.
As such, many of the upcoming games will be based on Netflix Originals IP and will be available to play through their own hub.
Peters suggested that the upcoming interactive narrative games are “easier to build,” and noted that Netflix has “lots more, including very different types of games yet to come in the quarters and years ahead”.
Theodore A Sarandos, co-Ceo, said that the games offered an “opportunity here to serve super fandom with games is really fun and remarkable.”
“I think the idea of being able to take a show and give the superfan a place to be in between seasons and even beyond that, to be able to use the game platform to introduce new characters and new storylines or new plot twist events, now you could do those kind of things and then they can then materialise in the next season or in the sequel to the film.”
