Netflix announces ‘Instadocs,’ starting with the Alex Murdaugh story

Netflix documentaries have time and again played a crucial role in shaping viewers’ understanding of real-life stories that often read like fiction. Although they’ve all been part of the headlines at some point or another, since captions can only go so far, documentaries tend to lift the lid on the whole picture, which also stands true for the newly announced Instadocs.

Described as a quick-turnaround documentary series, Instadocs promises to take the audience into the eye of the storm, launching them into the heart of the buzziest headlines that will blow your mind with facts and insights.

Executive-produced by Josh Tyrangiel and Connor Schell, Steve Yaccino, best known for his works on Giuliani: What Happened to America’s Mayor? and Killer Lies: Chasing a True Crime Con Man, serves as the showrunner for Instadocs, which is set to open with the Alex Murdaugh story. “The best documentaries don’t just capture history – they shape how we understand it,” Tyrangiel says to Tudum.

The forthcoming Netflix docu-series is expected to cover a multitude of topics, including current events, crises, and cultural moments. Similarly, every instalment will be paced in the speed of each real-life story, arriving at the peak of discussions and debates. “With Netflix, we have the infrastructure to match the speed of the world we’re documenting. Instadocs is about giving audiences something they’ve never had before: depth and craft at the moment it matters the most.”

Scheduled for a release on May 30th, the Netflix documentary, produced by Words + Pictures, will kick-start with Instadocs: Alex Murdaugh, Unconvicted, capturing the explosive overturning of Alex Murdaugh’s double homicide conviction by the South Carolina Supreme Court. While the story has been heavily covered by streaming counterparts previously, including Netflix, Instadocs will feature all-new interviews.

For those unaware, Alex Mudaugh, the notorious subject of the first episode of Instadocs, was found guilty of murdering his wife, Maggie and son, Paul, in 2023. He was eventually convicted on two counts of murder and two counts of using a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. In fact, Murdaugh pleaded guilty to over a dozen financial crimes.

As Murdaugh began serving consecutive life sentences, the verdict was appealed by his team, alleging that Colleton County Clerk Beck Hill interfered with the jury. It was on May 13th, 2026, that the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned the double-murder conviction, allowing him a new trial that could start next year.

Instadocs: Alex Murdaugh, Unconvicted comprises interviews with South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, the Trial Watchers creators, and jurors, including Myra Crosby. Mark your calendars now!
