Netflix announce ‘Squid Game’ season two release date
Netflix has finally announced the release date for the highly anticipated season two of Squid Game. The South Korean drama will arrive on screens just after Christmas on December 26th. Netflix confirmed the release date along with a teaser clip for the show.
Netflix has also confirmed that a third and final season of the show will arrive in 2025; however, there has yet to be a specific date for when that can be expected.
The official description for season two states, “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport.” It continues, “Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organisation proves deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”
The sequel series arrives almost three years after the original in 2021. The nine-episode debut was a hit worldwide, breaking records for the streaming platform while currently ranking as one of the most-watched television seasons in the company’s history.
The original series followed a group of contestants, all of whom struggled for cash, fighting to the death for a life-changing sum of money in the games. Written by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show is among the popular Netflix series that will be returning this year.
The series became the first non-English language drama series to receive several nominations at the Emmys, including Best Drama. Lee Jung-jae made history as the first Korean to win the ‘Best Actor’ award as the lead star of Squid Game. Hwang also made history as the first Asian director to win in the ‘Outstanding Drama Series’ category and the first director to win for a non-English language series.
A number of cast members will be returning for the second series; however, it is yet to be determined how their characters will play into the new iteration of Squid Game. Lee Jung-jae will be making a comeback, as will Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo. The series will also welcome a number of new cast members, including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Lee Jin-uk, Park Gyu-young, Park Sung-hoon, and more.
More details of the series will be released in due course. Until then, watch the teaser trailer for season two of Squid Game below.
