Netflix and Shawn Levy creating Madonna limited series
A limited series detailing the life and career of Madonna is being created for Netflix, with producer Shawn Levy at the centre of the project.
The pair are working together as a fresh start on the biographical series, Deadline reported on May 12th, although it is not linked to the previous musical biopic on the singer’s life that was previously in the works.
Ozark actor Julia Garner had been set to star in that film as the Queen of Pop, but it was ultimately scrapped in 2023.
The show is still in the early stages of development, and as such concrete details are scarce, but it is understood that Levy’s production company, 21 Laps, has struck an exclusive deal with the streamer to executive produce the series.
It is not yet clear how significant a role Madonna herself will take in the production of the project, but Garner is allegedly still keen to take on the role, although it is not known what stage of the singer’s life the series will focus on.
For Levy, committing Madonna’s life to the screen comes as the next step after he was behind huge Netflix smash hit Stranger Things, as well as taking the mantle of producer on the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter movie, which is set to star Ryan Gosling.
When a feature film of her life was initially announced by Universal in 2020, Madonna said at the time: “I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world.”
However, even when the project was eventually shelved, she has remained open to creating a biopic in some form, and hinted last year on social media that a TV series could be in the works.
Details of a title and release date for the Madonna biopic have not yet been revealed.
