The 10 most popular series on Netflix this week: January 2023

We’re halfway through January, which depending on where in the world you are, probably means it’s cold, grey and generally horrible outside. One thing these gloomy winter months do offer is the chance to catch up on some telly. That’s clearly what lovers of Ginny & Georgia have been doing of late, as seasons one and two of the family drama are holding the top spots this week.

The show follows 15-year-old high schooler Ginny – played by Antonia Gentry – and her mother Georgia – Brianne Howey – as they try to make a new life for themselves in a small town in New England. The series has spawned new fashion, dances and viral trends, proving Georgia’s assertion that she and her daughter are “like the Gilmore Girls” correct.

At number three this week, we’ve got the enormously popular first season of Wednesday, which broke records when it became the most successful Netflix Show of all time, having accumulated 57,820,000 hours worth of viewing time. That’s small fry compared to season two of Ginny & Georgia, which has raked in 162,720,000 hours in its first two weeks.

Holding the number four spot this week is the second season of the gritty Norse saga Vikings: Valhalla, which takes place nearly a century after the events of Michael Hirst’s original six-series historical drama Vikings. It tells of the near obliteration of the Vikings by the united Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.

If you’re not so keen on watching painted warriors batter each other with axes, you’ll be pleased to hear the third season of Emily In Paris is currently at number seven, having cultivated 25,040,000 hours of viewing time despite a slew of bad reviews. That’s just above the first season of NBC medical drama New Amsterdam, which is at number eight.

Medical professionals like Dr Max Godwin would probably be quite helpful in the world of The Walking Dead, the eleventh season of which is currently at number nine. That just leaves the first season of The Recruit, which has slipped in at number ten and currently has 13,430,000 hours of viewing time on the clock.
