Mitski to make soundtrack for upcoming 'The Queen's Gambit' musical

American singer-songwriter Mitski has been tasked with making the soundtrack for the stage version of the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit.

The series followed Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon through her chess victories and struggles with addiction. The show was highly acclaimed, earning 11 Emmys and becoming Netflix’s most-viewed scripted limited series.

Following the show’s mammoth success, a theatrical adaptation of The Queen’s Gambit was announced in 2021. Playwright Eboni Booth and director Whitney White will work with Mitski to bring the show to the stage.

Sharing her excitement about the new project, Mitski shared, “Before Level Forward even brought the idea of making a musical of The Queen’s Gambit, I was a fan of the Netflix show, and an even greater fan of the original novel. So I was already determined to be a member of this team.”

She continued, “And then I met Eboni and Whitney, and my determination grew tenfold! I absolutely had to be a part of this! I am ecstatic to get to work with all of these amazing creatives, who’ve each built beautiful and unique repertoires of their own.”

Mitski previously lent her voice to the soundtrack for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Sheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once for the song ‘This Is a Life’. The track, which saw Mitski collaborate with Talking Heads frontman and Broadway star David Byrne.

Earlier this year, Mitski released her seventh album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, to huge acclaim. In a four-and-a-half star review of the record, Far Out wrote, “The record harms and heals in equal measure, flitting between Mitski’s internal monologue and external self-reflection, with highly concentrated emotion infusing every line and every instrumental swell. Love may be just as inhospitable as the land and the self, prone to endless mistakes and missteps, but that won’t stop Mitski from trying.”
