Meet the ‘Black Rabbit’ characters ahead of the Netflix release
Black Rabbit is about to open the gates on Netflix. And it goes without saying that everyone’s invited. But who’s sending the invites? Let’s check out!
The new limited series from Zach Baylin and Kate Susman is set to hit the shelves on September 18th. Starring Jude Law and Jason Bateman as Jake and Vince Friedkin, the upcoming thriller revolves around Black Rabbit, a high-end New York City restaurant on its way to becoming a hotspot of the high-octane nightlife scene.
While Jake started the business with Vince, the latter has been out of the landscape for good. But once he returns to New York, trouble is not too far. With his arrival, not only does he threaten Jake’s well-established life and career, but he also takes him down in the underworld of ruthless criminals.
So, before you RSVP, don’t forget to meet the characters who will make Black Rabbit hip and happening, starting with the two polar opposite brothers.
The Brothers
Jake Friedkin
When you meet Jake Friedkin at the beginning of Black Rabbit, he has his ducks in a row. As an organised, responsible, and in-control persona, he demonstrates stability and competence. With his life in order and a thriving business, he has made up his mind to expand it as well. But that’s only until his younger brother, Vince, returns to the scene, upending everything he built from scratch.
Jude Law, who plays Jake in the upcoming limited series, opened up about his character arc to Tudum. “When you meet Jake, he has sort of turned his life around,” he says. But to find out what goes wrong, don’t forget to tune into Black Rabbit on Netflix.

Vince Friedkin
Unlike Jake, Vince Friedkin is a mess. When you meet him at the start, the former addict is struggling to stay afloat. This alone leads him back to Jake’s door. But as they say, one bad apple spoils the bunch.
Jason Bateman portrays Vince in Black Rabbit. Speaking of his character, he said, “He makes a bunch of mistakes and is risky to have around, but he’s a well-meaning guy. He’s a problem, but he’s super lovable because he’s just not that bright.”

The Black Rabbit Operators
Estelle
Introduced as the brilliant interior designer of Jake’s beloved Black Rabbit, Estelle also has another intriguing identity, entering as the girlfriend of investor Wes.
At the beginning, Jake offers her a job to design a potential new restaurant, in addition to her work with the existing one. Cleopatra Coleman plays Estelle in Black Rabbit, who has previously helmed limited Netflix series like Dopesick and Clipped.

Roxie
Portrayed by Amaka Okafor, Roxie is the ultimate master chef of Black Rabbit. But her ideas aren’t limited to culinary and cuisines. She also has her own ideas about which direction the business should run and how. For those uninitiated, Akafor also appeared in Bodies and The Responder.

Wes
Wes is the Black Rabbit investor and musician, who’s also Estelle’s boyfriend. Described as a ‘fixture’ in the restaurant’s social proximity, the character is brought to life by the super-talented Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, who has also been recently roped in for another high-stakes Netflix thriller, All the Sinners Bleed, an adaptation based on SA Cosby’s bestselling 2023 novel.

Anna
Not much is said about Anna, except the fact that she’s the bartender of Jake’s up-and-coming New York City hotspot. Despite their professional relationship, Anna seems to be at loggerheads with the owner. Played by Abbey Lee, she’s best known for her work in Mad Max: Fury Road and Office Christmas Party, among others.

Tony
Tony is the last from the queue of Black Rabbit employees. Like Anna, much is reserved about the character for the feast that awaits September 18th. Yet, what’s known is that he’s a kitchen employee who is in close professional proximity to Roxie.
Robin de Jesús, famous for his roles in tick, tick… BOOM! and The Boys in the Band portray Tony in the series.

The Bad Guys
Mancuso
Mancuso is a New York City top banana, more of a “kingpin”, with quite the authority over Vince, thanks to the significant amount of debt he still owes. Deaf actor Troy Kotsur has portrayed the character for Black Rabbit. Conversing with Tudum about how he came to play the role, Baylin said, “We started asking about what he wanted to do and how we could work with him. And he told us he really wanted to play a bad guy. So, when we started to put together this role, we wrote it specifically for him.”
For those unaware, Kotsur is the first deaf actor to win an Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for Coda. You can also watch his magic in The Mandalorian and Foundation to admire his range.

Junior
Junior is a wrecked, incompetent heir of Mancuso. He’s also one of the two minions who is sent to track down Vince. Forrest Weber plays Junior for the Netflix series, having previously appeared in The Blacklist and Law & Order.

Babbit
Babbit is the second minion who sticks by Junior through thick and thin. Just another one of Mancuso’s henchmen. Chris Coy, who has appeared in Lawmen: Bass Reeves and The Deuce, portrays Babbit.

The Family
Gen
This one’s a surprise. Gen is actually the estranged daughter of Vince, who also has her world upside down with Vince back at her door. She is played by Odessa Young, who you must have seen in Shirley and Assassination Nation.

Val
Val ties back to Jake’s past. She is his former wife and the mother of his son, Hunter. Dagmara Dominczyk plays Val for Black Rabbit, whose showbiz credits are never-ending, including Succession, The Lost Daughter, and Priscilla.

Hunter
Brought to life by Blue Bloods’ Michael Cash, Hunter rounds out the Black Rabbit character list as Jake and Val’s son. As for the rest, stay glued to the Netflix screen because the series releases tomorrow, September 18th.
