Netflix struck a staggering £370million deal with Roald Dahl Story Company (RDSC) which gave it exclusive acquisition rights to the legendary author’s works. Among various planned Netflix adaptations, Roald Dahl’s Matilda: The Musical is on its way to Netflix.

Roald Dahl, with his mysterious and magical stories for children, has delighted generation after generation with his whimsical worlds. Netflix’s initial deal with the author’s company involved an animated series based on Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and a live-action adaptation of Matilda: The Musical.

The upcoming Netflix production is an adaptation of the tony and Oliver Award-winning anonymous musical. Besides using the original musical music written by Tim Minchin, the film is directed by Tony Award-winning director Matthew Warchus. When will Matilda: The Musical release on Netflix?

Although Matilda: The Musical was initially scheduled for a 2021 release, it has been pushed back to December 2022. While the film will be available globally on Netflix, it will have an exclusive theatrical run in the United Kingdom.

Who are the cast members of Matilda: The Musical

Previously, male characters would reprise the role of the formidable, bullish headteacher Miss Trunchbull, the dubious headmistress of the Crunchem Primary School.

However, Dame Emma Thompson has taken over the role of Ralph Finneas and will be seen as the strict and evil headteacher. In the teaser, she already looks pretty terrifying in the characteristic trenchcoat as she “disciplines” a child by flinging her over by her pigtails, before asking the children to check if she is alive!

Although the creators approached Emma Stone to play the role of Miss Honey, it eventually went to Lashana Lynch from No Time To Die. Miss Honey is the kindly teacher in the school who understands Matilda’s worries and troubles.

Here is the full list of the cast:

  • Dame Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull

What is Matilda: The Musical about?

Based on Roald Dahl’s book of the same name and the subsequent eponymous West End and Broadway musical, the film will revolve around the titular Matilda, an incredibly gifted and intelligent five-year-old girl who is burdened by the idiosyncratic stupidity of her family.

At school, she borrows books from the kindly librarian Miss Phelps and befriends a teacher named Miss Honey who helps nurture Matilda’s intellectual prowess.

However, Matilda’s intellectual pursuit is deterred by the tyrannical school headmistress, Miss Trunchbull who has a penchant for brutally punishing indisciplined young children whom she calls “rebels”.

When she is bestowed with telekinetic superpowers, Matilda uses them to rise against Miss Trunchbull and bring justice to those who have been wronged by the villainous woman.
