John Boyega keen to replace Regé-Jean Page on ‘Bridgerton’

From a galaxy far, far away to the Regency era of London in 1813, Star Wars and Attack the Block actor John Boyega has expressed a desire to replace Regé-Jean Page in the Netflix period drama Bridgerton, after the latter’s departure from the show.

It all came out during a roundtable discussion with the Hollywood Reporter, where, together with Jonathan Majors, Josh O’Connor, Chris Rock and Regé-Jean Page, the actor discussed his fondness of the show. In good jest, the actor commented: “I’m trying to get that Bridgerton money, man…I need to wear them skintights. I need to be the new guy up in there,” to which Page quickly replied, “Tell you what, I’ll have that Star Wars money, you can have the Bridgerton money”.

Though John Boyega went on to reveal his genuine feelings towards the project, noting, “But, honestly, something like that… give me a horse and a lovely maiden and all of that”.

Released on Christmas Day back in 2020, Bridgerton became a surprise hit for Netflix, with the often tight-lipped company revealing that ‘82 million households had watched the series in its first 28 days of availability’, making it the services most-watched original series launch to date. With a rich, sumptuous design, and a melodramatic, soapy drama at the core, Bridgerton became a delight for fans worldwide, with Regé-Jean Page the standout star.

Announcing his exit in May 2021, Regé-Jean Page had few qualms about leaving the show, or publicising his departure, saying “he wasn’t nervous at all” to break the news to fans. With no real preference for where he wants to go next, Page stated that: “I want everything I do to be as sexy as ‘Bridgerton,’ just in different ways”.

Meanwhile, John Boyega has announced the sequel to his breakthrough role in 2011s Attack the Block, with a release date yet unconfirmed for the future.
