Jenna Ortega on why Wednesday’s friendship with Enid works so well on screen

Wednesday Addams is allergic to colours. Despite that, her friendship with Enid Sinclair had become the highlight of the first season, especially when she saved Netflix’s deadpan darling’s life from the mighty Hyde. But ever really wondered what makes them click so easily, even after all these differences? Well, Jenna Ortega knows!

In a recent conversation with Tudum, on-screen roommates and best friends Ortega and Emma Myers sat down to interview each other. They shed light on various topics, including their first meeting, their real-life equations, but most importantly, why their on-screen dynamic works so well despite being polar opposites.

According to the Scream actor, Wednesday and Enid’s friendship doesn’t work out despite the differences, but because of them. As Ortega sees the diverse characters, they still have a lot in common, such as Wednesday and Enid are somewhat equally “ambitious, driven, and slightly psychotic characters.”

Consequently, she believes it’s really easy for the characters to go down a rabbit hole. “Sometimes you need someone to keep you tethered to the ground,” Ortega continued. And perhaps, that’s what Wednesday means to Enid and vice versa. Even after all these differences, they have the utmost respect for each other, their strength and their abilities. There’s also a thread of confidence within the characters that is distinct, but liberating.

“So the fact that we’re these two self-assured individuals who have found each other is … well, I think we recognise how unique that is,” Ortega added. While one couldn’t agree more, Ortega took the lead to ask another important question about whether they are similar to their characters on screen.

As per Myers, Ortega is more like Wednesday than she is like Enid. “It is true. There’s not an ounce of you in Enid,” the Wednesday actor agreed. Ortega even went ahead to reveal that if they had an opportunity to work together elsewhere, she’d prefer a movie instead of a TV show. And since they’re pretty much done with all the mystery mayhem, Myers chimed in, saying, “I’d love to do something serious with you.”

Perhaps, something where Myers can portray herself. While fans would love nothing more than to see them reunite on more showbiz occasions than just Wednesday, for now, they can live the magic of their on-screen friendship with Wednesday season two, part one, currently streaming on Netflix.
