Is ‘Sweet Magnolias’ returning for season six? Here’s what we know
Helen, Maddie, and Dana are back with the fifth chapter of Sweet Magnolias on Netflix, and while that’s a relief after a year-long wait, fans already want more.
The fifth season of the hit Netflix series finds the three best friends at increasingly different places in their lives, with the instalment primarily spotlighting Helen and Erik’s long-awaited wedding.
Although Sweet Magnolias season five concludes with reflection, confrontation, and most importantly, a wedding viewers waited for with bated breath, there’s currently no word on whether the show will return for a sixth season. Meaning, Netflix has yet to renew the show for a follow-up instalment.
Since the latest season dropped only recently, Netflix is most likely to examine the viewership numbers as well as completion rates before announcing its decision in the weeks to come. While according to What’s on Netflix, Sweet Magnolias has suffered a downward trend after the fourth season, there’s no denying that the show has a cult following.
Additionally, Sweet Magnolias introduced viewers to quite a few new chapters with characters looking forward to the future. So, if it were to end with the fifth season itself, there would be plenty of loose ends and, of course, a major reason for upset for fans who are already hanging.
Yet, in a conversation with Parade, Brooke Elliott, who portrays Dana Sue in the Netflix original series, expressed hope about Netflix renewing the show for another season, saying, “I would love to see what happens next with these characters. I’d love to dig deeper into all the things we leave unresolved at the end of season five.”
Meanwhile, in a separate interview with US Weekly, Joanna Garcia Swisher said, “I don’t think that it’s written as the end by any stretch of the imagination. But we’ve also gotten to be here for five seasons and tell an incredible story.”
“If this is it for us, we have no control over it, except that we are just trying to do what we think our fans will like and enjoy. [With season four], we almost had to burn it down [with Bill’s death] for that fresh start. And this season, you really get that. With that comes exciting and new ventures, possibilities, and relationships. It’s twisty and turny – that’s for sure.”
While it does feel like the stars and creator are on the same boat as the fans, wholeheartedly seeking yet another season, both will have to wait until Netflix officially greenlights Sweet Magnolias for a sixth season. Until then, stream the first five seasons and stay tuned for more updates!
