Is ‘Mating Season’ returning for a second instalment?
Netflix’s Big Mouth creators Nick Kroll, Jennifer Flackett, Andrew Goldberg, and Mark Levin just dialled up the unfiltered fun-factor with a raunchy new adult animated comedy, set in the animal kingdom, titled Mating Season.
Since premiering on May 22nd, the 10-episode instalment has become the go-to guilty pleasure for quirky animation geeks.
Mating Season follows a group of lovable, horny woodland animals as they navigate the chaotic, messy, and hilarious realities of modern relationships, dating, and mating in the wild. Throughout the series, the group explores complex, contemporary relationship dynamics, including polyamory and performance anxiety, while dealing with the primal urge to find a mate before the season ends.
While every power-packed Netflix original comes with the follow-up question of whether it will be renewed for future instalments, the post-premiere buzz surrounding Mating Season is no different.
So, for those curious, Netflix has not officially renewed the adult animated comedy from the Big Mouth creators as of yet. However, that’s not a good enough reason to summon the upset already. Since the adult animated comedy premiered just a few days ago, Netflix is currently likely busy tracking its viewership numbers, completion rates, and social media buzz before making an official decision.
As viewers already know, it typically takes the streaming powerhouse anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months after the original premiere to announce a renewal.
Considering the pedigree of Mating Season’s creators, their streaming legacy, and Netflix’s history of supporting long-running adult animation projects, a second instalment is highly possible if the debut season does well.
The first season tracks four primary forest critters – Ray the raccoon, Fawn the deer, Josh the bear, and Penelope the fox – figuring awkward romances, survival instincts, and complete biological chaos during breeding season. By the end of the instalment, none of these characters has successfully sorted out their love lives or personal baggage, which is possibly an indicator acknowledged by critics that Mating Season was always intended to be a multi-season arc.
Plus, there’s plenty of room for additional storylines to carry on Mating Season forward. As a result, a future renewal doesn’t really seem unlikely.
That said, given the current silence from the acclaimed creators, fans might have to wait a little longer to get their answers. Until the official greenlight, stream all the episodes of Mating Season, currently available on Netflix.
