Is ‘Lupin’ returning for a fifth season on Netflix?
Gentleman thief Assane Diop finally arrived with Lupin’s long-awaited fourth season after a three-year hiatus, and he did so with a bang! The Netflix show not only shot to the top of the streamer’s global top 10 in a day but also earned a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The hit French series starring Omar Sy follows Assane as a changed man, strongly determined to leave his life of crime, finish his prison term, and reconcile with his son and family. But his original plan takes a backseat when a mysterious entity starts using Assane’s Lupin persona to carry out multiple heists and frames him.
To prove his innocence and find the copycat, Assane is forced out of retirement in the fourth part of Lupin, a blockbuster instalment that continues garnering rave reviews everywhere. But fans clearly didn’t want the credits to roll just after eight episodes following a three-year hiatus since Part Three’s premiere. As a result, they cannot stop asking that one question: Is it returning for more?
Well, as of yet, Netflix hasn’t officially renewed the heist thriller for a fifth season. But that’s not very surprising, given it’s barely been a week since the fourth part hit shelves on October 23rd.
In most cancellations and renewals, Netflix weighs a few non-negotiable metrics, including viewership figures and completion rates before an official announcement. As a result, a formal announcement usually takes multiple weeks, if not months.
Of course, in a few exceptional cases, Netflix renews future instalments before the pending one can debut. In fact, some shows are lucky enough to receive rapid renewals post-release. However, the streaming giant has remained tight-lipped about Lupin’s future. But that’s not a good enough reason to lose all your hope already!
Since Netflix hasn’t billed the fourth season of Lupin as the final instalment, it already gives a sliver of hope. And the rave reviews that followed right after its return suggest it doesn’t seem like a definitive end just yet.
In a recent conversation with French magazine Premiere, Sy, also a co-showrunner alongside Louis Leterrier on Lupin this season, revealed the reason behind the three-year hiatus. “You have to be careful not to get caught up in your own little world, in a kind of selfish fantasy where the audience doesn’t feel included. That’s why we took our time to bring something new to the table.”
While he didn’t explicitly address the possibility of a fifth part, Sy opened up about how he would want the end to look for Assane. In an interview with Radio Times, he said, “I’ll make sure that it’s going to have the ending that I wish for him… which is him finally finding peace, you know. Because from the first season, it’s been Assane struggling to be Assane and Lupin; both sides of him are really in a kind of schizophrenic crisis.”
“So, being able to live both [sides of him] in peace, and finally being the father he wants to be. I really wish that for him.”
