Is 'Luckiest Girl Alive' really based on a true story?

Luckiest Girl Alive has been one of the top trendings on the streamer for a while now. The film stars Mila Kunis amongst other talented stars. But what really makes the story a unique one is its plot. The story has been derived from a best-selling book of the same name written by author Jessica Knoll. The story revolves around truly one of the luckiest girls alive. But is the story true?

If you have not watched the film yet and want to steer clear of the spoilers, this is your chance to leave. For the others, let’s begin with the plot. The film encompasses the life of TifAni FaNelli (Mila Kunis), who has it all. A life most would envy. One with a successful career as a journalist. She is a hardworking woman with a bright future ahead. And above it all, she has a rich fiance who is the personification of perfection. Unfortunately, perfection always comes at a cost.

Ani revisits her rather disturbing past when she visits her hometown. As a teenager, Ani was brutally assaulted and gang raped by a group of boys. Quite as the reflection of the society, we live in today, the community she comes from questions her narrative. However, things escalate further when her classmates get guns to school and end up shooting the boys involved.

Is ‘Luckiest Girl Alive’ a true story?

Questions as to whether the film and the story are based on true stories came up multiple times. Until recently, the author accepted the rumours and spoke up. Knoll explained the real reason that led her to speak up was the interactions with her female audience. The assault on the film really happened. The author was raped by the boy she had likings towards and at least two others.

In an essay, the author spoke up about her past, “I know I woke facing a bare back. There was a nauseating moment where I had no idea where I was and whom I was with, but if it had to be anyone, at least let it be A Boy. Please let it be A Boy. Then he turned over. He wasn’t A Boy,”.

Knoll continued, “He was Another Boy, A Third Boy, one I didn’t like or find the least bit attractive. He laughed about how hungover he was, how crazy the party had been, how the reason I couldn’t find my underwear was that it was downstairs.”

However, the school shooting involved in the plot is fictional. Regardless, there were multiple similarities in the semi-autobiographical book by the author. She also worked as a successful journalist and spent her first five years working for Cosmopolitan.

The film Luckiest Girl Alive has received some harsh criticism for production reasons. However, against all odds, it keeps trending. Be it a strong and intense plot, or a jarring incident that affects many individuals to this day. Whether it is Mila Kunis’s brilliant performance or the strength in Knoll’s account of her past. The film is definitely a must-watch. So without further ado, add it to your weekend watchlist today.
