How does ‘Notes from the Last Row’ end for Professor Heo Mun-oh?

Netflix’s new K-drama, Notes from the Last Row, is an uneasy suspense thriller that actively works at blurring fiction and reality, not just for viewers, but also for the characters, who think they’re seemingly in control of the narrative, especially Heo Mun-oh.

The Netflix limited series follows a disillusioned literature professor and failed novelist, Mun-oh, whose dormant ambitions are revived when he discovers a mysterious engineering student, Lee Kang, always in the last row of his lecture hall, who has an untapped genius for writing. What begins as a simple desire to groom Kang’s writing skills evolves into a dangerous obsession and a web of manipulation.

So, it’s only natural that everyone loses something or the other by the end of the show, but probably nobody more than Mun-oh himself. Upon realising that Kang’s weekly stories are far from fictional, Mun-oh doesn’t stop them. If anything, he finds himself more drawn, actively critiquing chapters, encouraging further manipulation, and urging for stronger emotional conflicts.

But as the tables turn and Mun-oh realises that the eye of the narrator has found a new subject, in fact, the one person who taught him everything, it is probably already too late. While there’s no simple answer to how Notes from the Last Row ends for Mun-oh, here is how it unfolds.

How does Notes from the Last Row end for Heo Mun-oh?

After realising he has been tricked by Lee Kang in the finale of Notes from the Last Row, Professor Heo Mun-oh drives back and chases him. But on losing him, he returns home only to find his wife packed to leave. Observing two wine glasses, Mun-oh immediately imagines that the worst has already happened between her and Kang. And to sprinkle salt on his wound, she reveals that Kang is not a kid, but an adult.

It turns out this was not the first time they had met, but when he doesn’t get the answers to his questions, he leaves. What follows is his discovery of an anonymous post that exposes everything about Mun-oh, including the script he wrote earlier today. While that causes a chain reaction of upending, personal and professional, besides the details on his fallout, viewers may have questions about why Kang did what he did to Mun-oh.

Well, according to Kang, the seeds of the revenge arc were actually sown by Mun-oh 12 years ago. Yes, Mun-oh originally met Kang at his orphanage over a decade ago, where the professor ensured the little boy could warm up to him and tell his story. After the sessions, Kang shared he wanted to write letters to Mun-oh, and when his wife informed him, he was angered by her giving away their address.

Mun-oh openly announced that he had no intention to read those letters, ultimately revealing that the reason he conversed with Kang in the first place was in search of inspiration. Kang heard the entire exchange where Mun-oh described the tragic loss of his parents as “the same old sob story” and discarded him as uninspiring.

As Kang grows up and finds himself at the same university, he runs into Se Yun, and Kang develops an interest in him due to the latter’s father’s proximity to Mun-oh. It is the letter Mun-oh reads that actually reveals the accident they witnessed on the road was a coincidence that helped the story fare this far, meaning everything he said so far was a lie, a fiction.
