Halle Berry and Robert Downey Jr’s twisted 2003 mystery is now on Netflix
Halle Berry already had an Oscar when Gothika rolled up in 2003; on the contrary, Robert Downey Jr was years away from becoming Marvel’s iron-plated king, so when these two came together in a psychiatric hospital… People, that’s something you don’t want to miss, and lucky for you, Netflix has got it back. But we’ll give you a minute to process all that critical information first.
Gothika was first released in US cinemas on November 21st, 2003, directed by Mathieu Kassovitz, the man behind La Haine. Budget? Around $40million. Worldwide haul? Roughly $141.6m. That figure might not look all that wild compared with the blockbuster numbers we routinely see today, but 23 years ago, it was nuts.
Berry plays Dr Miranda Grey, a criminal psychiatrist at Woodward Penitentiary, where Penélope Cruz plays patient Chloe Sava. Eventually, Miranda runs into a terrified girl on the road and blacks out and wakes up inside Woodward again, except, surprise, she does not have the keys anymore. She is now one of the patients. What a solid bolt from the blue!
But that’s not even the worst part. Miranda is told her husband, Douglas, has been murdered, and the evidence says she did it. The poor woman remembers none of the crime. Downey plays fellow psychiatrist Pete Graham, who now has to treat his colleague while she insists she is innocent! On top of all that, she starts experiencing stuff that gets harder to explain medically.
At this point? Yeah, we have a situation. The murder mystery has turned into a supernatural horror.
And if you think that all the crazy is just going on inside the film, know that during a physical scene between Berry and Downey, he twisted her arm while restraining her and accidentally broke it. Berry later called it a “freak mishap” and said production stopped for eight weeks while she recovered. Bloody hell, man!
There is, thankfully, a happier story buried in Gothika. Producer Susan Levin met Robert Downey while working on the film, and before long, the romance rumours were floating in the air. Good thing they weren’t false, and they married in 2005 and later founded Team Downey together. So underneath all the ghosts and murder, this is the set where one of Hollywood’s enduring partnerships started.
However, back in the day, critics were not throwing a party. Gothika took a massive kicking, with reviewers picking apart the logic and wondering what on earth was going on with some of those supernatural twists. Audiences clearly did not care nearly as much, though. They showed up and helped turn a $40million movie into a $141m worldwide hit. Say what you like about it… Those numbers are proof that people loved it.
And honestly, that is probably why the movie is on Netflix now. Nobody needs to pretend Gothika is some flawless masterpiece. It is a weird picture of early-2000s studio horror, with Berry cashing in her movie-star status while a pre-Iron Man Downey helps solve the mystery. Twenty-three years later should be enough for you to revisit it, and if it is your first time, you are in for a ride.
