Four new true-crime documentaries to stream this weekend
The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part (Chris Smith, 2026)
Directed by Chris Smith, The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part is a 91-minute true-crime documentary on Thomas Randolph, a Las Vegas man with a shady marital history, who was married six times, with four of his wives dying under mysterious circumstances. The docufilm follows Dateline senior investigative producer and journalist Dan Slepian, who covered the case for two decades, and a detective to piece together Randolph’s checkered history of manipulation and deception.
Randolph garnered attention when his sixth wife, Sharon Causse, and a handyman named Michael Miller were found dead with gun wounds inside the couple’s Las Vegas home on May 8, 2008. Although he alleged that a masked intruder broke in and murdered Causse, prompting him to shoot the intruder in self-defence, investigators argued otherwise. The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part follows the multi-decade investigation into Randolph, who was accused of staging a fake home-invasion cover-up.
General Mayhem: The Killing of Brigadier J (Rob Sixsmith, 2026)
General Mayhem: The Killing of Brigadier J examines the real-life brutal murder of Indonesian police officer Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat, AKA Brigadier J, who was shot dead inside a resourceful Indonesian general’s official home. In the immediate aftermath, several high-ranking officials alleged that the controversial death was the outcome of a fatal shootout following a violent assault.
But as public pressure mounted with independent investigations diverting attention from the initial claims, the official narrative began to crumble. General Mayhem: The Killing of Brigadier J works as an expose of the massive, layered cover-up and conspiracy orchestrated by the highest ranks of national law enforcement to shield those in command, avoid accountability, and most importantly, mislead the public in the wake of the backlash.
The Crash (Gareth Johnson, 2026)
Perhaps one of the most spine-chilling true-crime documentaries of the year, The Crash tells the story of 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla, who, while driving home with her boyfriend Dominic and their friend Davion after a graduation party, rammed into the side of a brick building at a speed of 100 mph, instantly killing two. Shirilla was the only one to survive the collision on July 31st, 2022, in Strongsville, Ohio.
Although the incident looked like a terrifying accident, as forensic experts and investigators dug deep and combed through the crime scene, the investigation turned into a probe into a double homicide. The Crash details the drawn-out investigation, findings, and the volatile and toxic relationship Shirilla shared with Dominic, using archival footage, first-hand witness testimonies, and text messages that show past threats.
I Survived a Serial Killer (Alexandre Gendron, 2021)
Although not a Netflix original true-crime documentary or new, I Survived a Serial Killer is currently streaming on the platform, making it a perfect weekend fit. The A&E true-crime series features firsthand accounts and testimonies of survivors who lived through harrowing encounters with notorious perpetrators and serial killers, some more widely known than the rest.
Each episode, roughly spanning 20 minutes, focuses on real-life survival stories of extremely ordinary people, mostly women, who faced infamous killers like Richard Beasley AKA The Craigslist Killer, Angel Resendiz, better known as The Railroad Killer, and David Parker Ray, dubbed The Toy Box Killer, among several others. I Survived a Serial Killer gives a voice to these people and tries to rebuild their narratives.
