A Toxic Love Story on Netflix recounts one of the most unsettling true crimes in recent memory, with the story of Ian Diaz, Angela Diaz, and Michelle Hadley, which may initially come across as a bizarre love triangle. But in reality, it is way more than what meets the eye.
Former US Deputy Marshal Ian and her then-wife Angela allegedly accused Michelle of cyberstalking, sending threatening messages and emails, and going as far as luring men to the couple’s house to fulfil a violent sexual fantasy when his wife was reportedly pregnant. Hadley, then 29, was subsequently arrested by the Anaheim, California, police, and wrongly put behind bars for 88 days.
It was only when digital investigators dug deeper that the reality of the situation and the actual truth came to light. When IP addresses of those emails were tracked back to the pair’s own devices, it was revealed that Ian and Angela had framed Michelle to ruin her life.

The Craigslist ad
One of the most alarming accusations laid on Michelle Hadley by Ian and Angela Diaz is that his ex-fiancée was allegedly impersonating his then-wife, responding to a Craigslist ad from a man soliciting a violent sexual fantasy. They alleged that Michelle was attempting to lure him to “show up at the condo, to rape Angela,” Ian Diaz’s friend, Leslie, said in A Toxic Love Story.
The person who posted the ad, Rick, was anonymously featured in the documentary. He recalled receiving an email from “Lilithistruth,” after sharing it. The account reportedly forwarded Angela’s pictures and shared the couple’s home address, asking him to “just show up.” But when he saw Ian at the door, he stepped back, reasoning that he didn’t want to enter “a situation where the boyfriend or husband doesn’t know,” he explained.
Michelle Hadley’s shocking admission
In a segment, Michelle Hadley confesses to “losing” her mind and writing “a couple very angry emails” in the documentary. According to Hadley, she was having an “out of body” experience. Upon professional consultation, a doctor eventually revealed that she was undergoing a “dissociative episode” because of “complex PTSD” from her relationship with Ian Diaz.
“I only ever sent these [first two] emails, but I was framed for all this horrible cyberstalking,” she says. While investigator Higley recalled Hadley experiencing a “nervous breakdown,” he had doubts about Michelle’s story. However, as the investigation progressed, suspicion grew largely on Angela, until they conjectured that “Angela might have only been a passenger, and this was Ian’s scheme.”
He revealed that the investigators speculated that Ian “seized on those [first emails] to create the ‘Lilith’ [email] account and language.”
Angela Diaz’s web of lies
Before winding up with Ian Diaz, Angela was dating Jason Rayburn in 2013. While everything was going well, Jason recalled in the true-crime documentary, “One night, she divulged that she had cervical cancer, stage 4.” However, when it came to Jason showing his support and extending warmth by offering to accompany her to chemo appointments, she never agreed.
Meanwhile, a former friend of Angela, Mary Bukovskis, alleges that she began raising her eyebrows about her alleged cancer battle right after she noticed discrepancies. She recounted that Angela would put on a hat, pretending that she was losing hair, although she noticed her tucking her hair into the hat quite a few times.
What ultimately confirmed her suspicion was when she called the facility Angela was supposedly receiving treatment at, only to find she wasn’t even a patient there.
Similarly, Jason found out the truth when Angela reportedly sent a picture from a “first person perspective” of her view while receiving the treatment. The picture was later found on Google Images, resulting in Jason and Mary confronting Angela in 2014. Although she refused to admit the truth, she admitted never getting chemo in a police audio from 2016.
The faking of pregnancy
Following Michelle’s apprehension, Ian Diaz allegedly called Leslie, claiming that Angela’s pregnancy sonograms were fake. When both meticulously searched the condo, they found pregnancy tests that were tampered with “blue markers” to show they were positive.
The revelation got Leslie thinking whether Michelle at all sent the emails. “Is it possible that Angela sent all of these emails to herself?” she said in the documentary.
Ian Diaz allegedly pressured Michelle to participate in a bizarre fantasy
When Michelle was dating Ian, she alleged that the latter confided to her about a cuckold fantasy. “We’re not compatible in this area,” she says in A Toxic Love Story. But even then, she claimed that Ian wouldn’t let it go and brought it up “over and over, multiple times a week.” She also admitted that Ian sent her men’s profiles on Craigslist that he wanted her to share the bed with.
The entire ordeal was so discomforting, she recalled crying about it. Michelle revealed that she hadn’t been in many relationships before Ian, so she thought, “Maybe, this is what women have to do in relationships.” She alleged that she gave in to the pressure, hoping they could “move past this,” but she felt like a “beautiful part of [herself] had died.”
