Netflix’s ‘Maternal Instinct’ reveals the horrifying story behind a faked pregnancy
Netflix, you’ve done it again! The platform has officially found another absolutely bonkers true-crime story to keep everyone on their toes, and this one is quite grim from start to finish. Netflix’s new documentary Maternal Instinct, releasing on June 12th, has dropped jaws with its trailer, for real, which, fair enough, because the real-life case behind this documentary is genuinely horrifying.
The documentary follows the story of Taylor Parker, a young woman from East Texas whose life looked perfectly normal from the outside. So far, we have understood that most Netflix docs begin with people living a normal life. Coming back to Taylor’s story, she was in a relationship with her boyfriend, Wade Griffin, constantly posting pregnancy updates online. She was so excited, showing off her baby bump and stuff and was genuinely excited about becoming a mum.
Naturally, people around her were so happy and believed her. Nobody had any reason to think anything strange was going on. Can you imagine someone posting bump pictures for months and holding pregnancy celebrations, only for the whole thing to turn out to be built on lies? Because that is exactly what happened here.
As Taylor’s supposed due date got closer, people around her began questioning bits of her story. Something was fishy! Little details weren’t adding up whatsoever. Some family members apparently became suspicious about the pregnancy itself, while others noticed odd behaviour they couldn’t explain. But even then, nobody could’ve predicted where this story was actually going because the reality behind it was far darker than anyone imagined.
What actually happened in the Taylor Parker case?
According to investigators, Taylor Parker allegedly spent months faking an entire pregnancy in order to convince people around her, including her boyfriend, that she was expecting a baby. Prosecutors later said she used fake baby bump prosthetics! Yes, read it again. And if that wasn’t enough, she went ahead and staged maternity photos, forged ultrasound images, and kept up the deception for nearly ten months.
The level of planning involved is what really chills you because this wasn’t one impulsive lie that went out of control. Authorities believed it was something maintained over a long period of time with too many precautions. Then, in October 2020, the case took a horrifying turn.
Police say Parker travelled to the home of 21-year-old Reagan Simmons-Hancock, who was genuinely pregnant at the time. Prosecutors later alleged Parker attacked and killed Simmons-Hancock before attempting to take her unborn child. Have your jaws dropped yet, or shall we wait a while?
The crime was so bloody horrifying that it immediately shocked communities across Texas and made national headlines because people genuinely struggled to process how disturbing the allegations were. And the way authorities uncovered everything sounds like something straight out of a crime thriller… The only change was that it was true this time.
Shortly after the attack, a Texas state trooper pulled Parker over after noticing her driving erratically on the highway. Parker claimed she had just given birth inside the vehicle, but medical staff quickly became suspicious because there were no physical signs she had recently been pregnant at all. From there, her lies collapsed like a house of cards.
In 2022, Taylor Parker was sentenced to death for the murder of Reagan Simmons-Hancock. Now Netflix’s Maternal Instinct is revisiting the disturbing case through interviews and accounts from people connected to the tragedy. And as terrifying as it sounds, you need to set a reminder for this one to remind yourself to be aware of such people.
