Five thrillers on Netflix where you just can’t guess the killer

When it comes to whodunits, Netflix doesn’t miss a beat.

While it’s a good thing to never run out of options, it’s also just as easy to get trapped in the recommendation paradox of “More Like This”. But just because the streamer sells, it doesn’t mean you’re sold on every suggestion. So, if you were too a collateral of subpar thrillers, here are five murder mysteries where you simply can’t guess the killer.

Sometimes, regardless of how tightly guarded the enigma is, pinpointing the real culprit becomes a cakewalk. It’s not always the plot points to blame; it’s also not really about the loose ends every time. With each new thrilling addition, the audience levels up with their sleuthing skills. So much so that it’s impossible to throw dust in their eyes, no matter how many compelling twists and turns Netflix pitches in.

But there are some thrillers where intuition fails, instincts go out of order, and the detective hats are shelved. This time around, Best of Netflix promises a marathon where the audience can’t help but scratch their heads.

Five Netflix thrillers to keep you guessing

Bodies (Marco Kreuzpaintner and Haolu Wang, 2023)

Mystery thrillers are designed to leave you dazed and confused, but imagine a sci-fi twist with an intergenerational conspiracy on top of that, and there you have Bodies. In a head-turning murder case spanning generations, this miniseries centres on the death of the same man, whose corpse appears in the same location over four different years, leading to four different detectives sniffing around the case.

The stakes grow higher with each finding, and the complex timelines will keep you on your toes. But if you think you have it in you to solve this hair-raising case, remember, there are four others still scrambling for answers ahead.

UNTAMED (Mark L Smith & Elle Smith, 2025)

At first, UNTAMED might look like yet another take on Netflix’s small-town mystery formula. But fair warning: don’t mistake it for an ordinary puzzle of mayhem where the answers are laid straight out front. It begins with a spine-chilling death, that of Jane Doe, whose identity is the first case to solve. But in the process of tracking a single death, Agent Kyle Turner’s personal life unravels as his past tangos with the present.

UNTAMED takes many directions where you might feel like you know who’s behind it all. But just when you assume you’ve figured it out, it pulls the rug from underneath the assurance.

Behind Her Eyes (Steve Lightfoot, 2021)

Most thrillers start with a murder and a murderer on the loose, but Behind Her Eyes walks into one, inadvertently and right in front of your eyes. Based on Sarah Pinborough’s 2017 novel, this Netflix limited series is a lesson in nothing is what it seems. It revolves around a single mother, Louise, who embroils herself in a romantic relationship with her new boss, David, while forming an unexpected bond with his wife, Adele. A potent broth of disaster, right?

But not more than what the love triangle pulls her into when the astral projections make way for a plot twist you’ve definitely not seen before. Behind Her Eyes systematically breaks familiarity by giving you enough to wonder about and robbing you of any comfort you may find in what you know.

Fool Me Once (David Moore and Nimer Rashed, 2024)

The first thing to keep in mind when addressing thrillers is to believe less. If you hold this wisdom close to your heart, you’ll go a long way without getting fooled. Fool Me Once is a Netflix series based on Harlan Coben’s 2016 novel, where the dead go undead, or so we start to believe.

It revolves around Maya Sternn, a recent widow, whose nanny cam catches her dead husband, Joe Burkett, conversing with her daughter. Armed with information that turns her life upside down, she slips deep into her own share of investigations to uncover the truth. But when the killer is out of the bag, chances are that your life will turn upside down, since not even in the wildest nightmare could you have thought of such a turnaround.

The Residence (Paul William Davies, 2025)

Besides a gripping storyline and a brooding opening salvo, a good thriller is known for elevating the sense of tension and palpitation with every sequence. While The Residence is far from the formula, complete with uncanny slapstick humour, nothing dilutes the suspense of the central mystery: the murder of AB Wynter.

With 157 suspects and 132 rooms to check out, you’ll often find yourself at a loss for direction in terms of who exactly to watch out for. But don’t worry, Cordelia Cupp has it figured out. So, sit back and trust her instincts, even if it means bird-watching in daylight with a killer on the loose.
