Five Netflix mystery thrillers to watch if you loved ‘Oasis’
If you’re somewhat sulking about still not having taken a luxurious summer escapade, Oasis on Netflix will have you thanking your stars.
Of course, we cannot really do anything about the FOMO. But on the bright side, you at least don’t have to deal with rich problems, like finding the dark side of your family’s celebrated legacy, only to end up becoming a victim of the criminal inheritance.
The Spanish mystery thriller follows Dani, who arrives with his family at Oasis Infinity – a palatial resort complete with VIP facilities, private beaches, and impenetrable security – for their summer holiday. And while there, he quickly befriends Celia, who happens to be the owner’s daughter. But when she mysteriously goes missing two nights into their trip, it prompts a law-enforced lockdown at the resort that turns every staff member and guest into a suspect.
While the premise is enough to pull anyone out of hibernation, once you’re finished, watch these five Netflix mystery thrillers after Oasis.
Five Netflix mystery thrillers to stream if you loved Oasis
The Perfect Couple (Sussanne Bier, 2024-Present)
If you specifically loved the aspects of luxury, secrets, and crime in Oasis, The Perfect Couple on Netflix is the ultimate follow-up you can opt for. The murder mystery miniseries centres on Amelia Sacks, a soon-to-be bride marrying into one of Nantucket’s wealthiest families, whose dreams of a fairytale wedding are upended when a dead body of one of the wedding guests washes up ashore hours before the ceremony.
Just like Celia’s disappearance kicks off a locked-room mystery, upending the blissful summer escapade of the wealthy guests, the maid of honour’s murder commences the central mystery in The Perfect Couple. The 2024 mystery thriller explores the intense police investigation that follows, uncovering the darkest, sordid secrets of the wedding party in attendance.
Elite (Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona, 2018-2024)
Another Spanish crime thriller on Netflix that scratches the itch of the high-stakes, sun-drenched mystery of Oasis is Elite. Specifically, if you prefer the young adult drama mixed with high-octane investigation, this is likely your best next watch. The teen thriller on Netflix follows three working-class students who receive scholarships to a prestigious, ultra-exclusive private school for the wealthy, Las Encinas.
What follows is an ensuing cultural clash between the privileged, wealthy teens and the scholarship students, quickly spiralling into an intense drama packed with murder and mind games. Elite blends the addictive, scandalous tropes of a typical teen soap opera with complex murder mysteries that will constantly leave you on your toes. Additionally, it shares more than one point of commonality with Oasis.
Who Killed Sara? (David Ruiz and Bernardo de la Rosa Villarreal, 2021-2022)
Yet another intense high-octane mystery involving a wealthy family and their dark secrets, similar to Celia’s case in Oasis, Who Killed Sara? is a Mexican mystery thriller that opens with Sara mysteriously falling to her death during a parasailing trip. Meanwhile, the story follows 18-year-old Alex Guzman, who spends 18 years in prison for the murder of his younger sister, who happens to be Sara.
Who Killed Sara? goes back in time to highlight the entire incident that seemingly took Sara’s life when she was on a vacation with her boyfriend and other members of the wealthy and influential Lazcano family. The series captures how power, money, coercion, and corruption took peace away from the lives of not only the victim but also her family members, who became targets of a powerful family desperately trying to protect their image.
The Weekend Away (Kim Farrant, 2022)
If you’re somewhat low on time, but still want something in the DNA of Oasis on Netflix to fill that void, go for The Weekend Away, eyes closed. Directed by Kim Farrant, the Netflix movie is a compact, highly twisted thriller set in a picturesque, breathtaking location in Croatia, where a much-needed best-friends getaway turns into a desperate search for the truth, after a mysterious disappearance that raises questions with no definite answers.
The Weekend Away follows Beth, who travels all the way to Croatia for a weekend getaway with her best friend, Kate. But after a wild night of partying, Beth wakes up with no memory of the previous evening, and to make things worse, she finds out that Kate is missing. As Beth searches for the missing pieces of the memories from last night alongside her elusive best friend, a body washes up ashore, making Beth the prime suspect for murder.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Rian Johnson, 2022)
Again, to cater to those who don’t have much time, we recommend Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, if you loved the locked-door mystery trope of Oasis. Serving as the second entry in the detective mystery series titled Knives Out, the 2022 film follows tech billionaire Miles Bron, who invites his close-knit group of wealthy friends to his private island in Greece amidst the pandemic for a murder-mystery party.
But among the group of ignorant riches dubbed The Disruptors is detective Benoit Blanc, who, quite enigmatically, finds himself at the party. Although the murder mystery plot starts out as all fun and games, when a real murder takes place right in front of them, Blanc is forced to let go of his vacation mood to put on the detective hat to solve the question at the heart of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
